Describe a person from whom others like to ask for advice | IELTS Speaking Part 2 + 3

Trong bài mẫu dưới đây, cô Thu Thủy từ The IELTS Workshop sẽ chia sẻ cách triển khai ý tưởng cho chủ đề “Describe a person from whom others like to ask for advice” – một đề bài thường xuất hiện trong IELTS Speaking Part 2.

Part 2: Describe a person from whom others like to ask for advice

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • Why people like to ask for his/her advice
  • What kind of advice he/she often gives
  • And explain how you feel about the person

1. Bài mẫu (Sample)

Today, I’d like to talk about someone whom people often seek out for advice, and that person is my father.
He’s not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also a great listener. People appreciate that he doesn’t jump to conclusions or give vague, one-size-fits-all advice. Instead, he listens carefully, asks thoughtful questions, and offers suggestions that are always practical, realistic, and easy to apply.

For example, when someone is struggling with a difficult decision, he doesn’t just tell them what to do. He helps them weigh the pros and cons, think through their options, and come to a decision that feels right for them.

He often gives advice related to managing stress, personal development, or career challenges. I’ve seen him guide friends and relatives through tough situations—whether they’re burned out at work or feeling lost about what direction to take next. His advice is always calm, sincere, and honest, which I think is why so many people trust him and keep coming back to him.

To be honest, I really admire my father. I feel truly lucky to have someone like him to turn to whenever I’m unsure about something. He’s not just a supportive family member, but also a role model who I’ve learned a lot from over the years.

Part 3:

1. Are professional consultancy services expensive in your country?

Yes, they are quite costly.  In Vietnam, services like legal consultation, business coaching, or financial advice can be expensive, especially in large cities like Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi. Because of this, most people only go to professionals when absolutely necessary, like legal disputes or business contracts. For everyday issues, people tend to rely more on friends or family advice to avoid the high cost.

  • Legal consultation – tư vấn pháp lý
  • Financial advice – lời khuyên về tài chính
  • Go to professionals – tìm đến chuyên gia
  • Legal disputes – tranh chấp pháp lý

2. Do you think the advice parents give their children is always good?

Not always, but it usually comes from love and experience. Parents often give advice based on what worked in the past, but sometimes that advice may not suit today’s world. For example, career choices or relationships have changed a lot compared to their time. So I think it’s good to listen to them, but we also need to think for ourselves and decide what fits best.

  • Suit today’s world – phù hợp với thế giới hiện đại

3. Why do some people like to ask others for advice on almost everything?

I believe it’s mainly due to a lack of confidence or fear of making mistakes. Some people feel more secure when they hear others’ opinions before making a decision. In some cultures, like many Asian societies, people value group harmony, so asking for advice is quite normal. It’s also a way for them to feel supported and reassured.

  • Value group harmony – coi trọng sự hòa hợp trong nhóm

4. Do people often ask for advice from professional people, like a lawyer?

Yes, especially when the situation is serious or complicated. If someone is dealing with legal issues, business contracts, or property matters, they usually turn to professionals. Although it’s expensive, it can prevent bigger problems later. Getting advice from a lawyer or expert gives people peace of mind and helps them make informed choices.

  • Make informed choices – đưa ra quyết định dựa trên hiểu biết
  • Turn to professionals – tìm đến chuyên gia để được giúp đỡ
  • Peace of mind – sự an tâm

5. Who should people ask for advice on big issues, family members or friends?

It depends on the issue and the relationship. For emotional or family problems, I think it’s better to talk to family members because they understand you deeply. But if the issue is related to work or studies, friends—especially those with experience—might give more practical advice. Sometimes, a mix of both can be helpful.

  • Practical advice – lời khuyên thực tế, hữu ích

6. Do you follow the advice of your family members?

Most of the time, yes, but not blindly. I respect my family and know they have my best interests at heart. However, I also like to think things through myself. If their advice makes sense, I follow it. If not, I try to explain my point of view and make my own decision.

  • Make my own decision – tự đưa ra quyết định
  • Not blindly – không mù quáng
  • Best interests at heart – luôn muốn điều tốt nhất cho ai đó
  • Makes sense – hợp lý
