The chart illustrates the percentage of adults in various age groups in the UK who used the internet on a daily basis between 2003 and 2006.
Overall, younger adults consistently recorded higher proportions of daily internet use than their older counterparts throughout the period. The data also reveal that the 16–24 age group had the highest percentage of users, while those aged 65 and over had the lowest. Additionally, all age groups showed a general upward trend in daily internet usage over these four years.
In terms of the younger age groups, the 16–24 category began with a high 80% in both 2003 and 2004. This figure then surged to nearly 100% in 2005, making it the leading group for daily internet use, before experiencing a slight decline to approximately 90% in 2006, though it remained the top user group. Meanwhile, the 25–44 and 45–54 cohorts displayed parallel patterns. The former started at around 60%, while the latter was slightly lower at about 50% in 2003. Both groups then saw a significant rise, reaching roughly 80% by 2006.
As for older adults, daily internet use was markedly lower but still showed growth. Among those aged 55–64, around 30% used the internet daily in 2003. This proportion fluctuated marginally between 30% and 35% over the next two years before climbing sharply to nearly 50% in 2006, placing it fourth among all age groups. Meanwhile, adults aged 65 and above recorded no daily internet usage in 2003. However, from 2004 onwards, this figure rose modestly from around 17% in 2004 and stabilised at around 20% by 2006.
