Is it easy for children to overcome a challenge?
What do children often do when they face a challenge?
1. Why do some people enjoy doing extreme sports?
To be honest, I have no idea as I always value my life and stay away from danger. But if I have to take a guess and put myself in those people’s shoes, I will say that the attraction lies on the thrill that a near-death experience can give you. Maybe they feel more alive in those intense moments, or perhaps they want to test their limits and prove to themselves that they are invincible. I’ve seen clips of people going skydiving, and they looked like they were having the time of their lives being 10.000 feet off the ground.
- Value (n/v) giá trị, coi trọng
- Thrill (n/v) sự phấn khích, làm phấn khích
- Intense (adj) mạnh mẽ, dữ dội
- Invincible (adj) bất khả chiến bại
2. What challenges would people face when learning new sports?
Well, speaking from experience, I have to say that one major challenge is getting over the fear of failure. When you’re trying something completely new, it’s easy to feel incompetent and embarrassed. Take college students for instance, they went through 12 years of PE classes playing different sports like badminton, football, or basketball. You would expect them to be used to all kinds of physical activities by now, but most of them can still experience difficulties attending classes in the sport which they’ve never tried before. I imagine another challenge could be the physical aspect, like building stamina or coordination, especially team sports that are intense and taxing.
- Incompetent (adj) thiếu năng lực, kém cỏi
- Stamina (n) sức bền, thể lực
- Coordination (n) sự phối hợp, điều phối
- Taxing (adj) đòi hỏi nhiều nỗ lực, căng thẳng
3. What activities do you think would make children feel challenged? Why?
If I had to guess, I think team sports or problem-solving games would be demanding for children. In team sports like soccer or baseball, they have to work together and rely on their teammates, which can be tough if they’re used to doing things alone. Problem-solving games, on the other hand, push them to think critically and stay patient, which is hard for kids who just want quick results.
- Demanding (adj) đòi hỏi cao, khó khăn
- Think critically: tư duy phản biện
4. Do most people choose to face a challenge alone or with others?
I think it really depends on the person, but if I had to generalize, I’d say most people probably prefer to face challenges with others. It’s comforting to have someone to lean on, especially if the challenge is difficult. But then again, there are those who feel more focused and in control when they handle things on their own.
- Generalize (v) khái quát hóa
- Lean on (v) dựa vào, nhờ cậy
5. Is it easy for children to overcome a challenge?
To be fair, I don’t think that it’s easy, but quite the opposite. Children are still in the process of learning how to cope with frustration, and their emotions can sometimes get the better of them. At the same time, kids can be really resilient when they have support from adults or their peers. Like the kid I saw on the football field the other day, he was feeling down as he hadn’t scored any goals for this team. However, as soon as he spotted his family on the bleachers, screaming and cheering for him, the boy ran like the wind and stole the ball from his opponent. At the end, he won the game thanks to the motivation from his family.
- Resilient (adj) kiên cường, có khả năng phục hồi
- Bleachers (n) khán đài
- Run like the wind (idiom) chạy nhanh như gió
6. What do children often do when they face a challenge?
From what I’ve seen, when kids are put in a difficult situation, they tend to react in different ways. Some might give up right away, especially if they feel overwhelmed, while others might get annoyed and ask for help from adults. On the flip side, there are those kids who get really determined and refuse to back down, no matter how tough things get.
- Overwhelmed (adj) choáng ngợp, quá tải
- On the flip side (phrase) ở mặt khác, mặt trái
- Back down (v) rút lui, nhượng bộ
