Will there be more or less green space in cities in the future?
Which cities are overcrowded in your country?
1. Do you think it is a good trend to have more big cities?
Sample 1: In my opinion, the shift towards having more large urban areas has both advantages and drawbacks. On the one hand, these cities provide greater access to employment, healthcare, and education, which can enhance living standards. However, this development may result in overcrowding, environmental challenges, and higher living expenses. Therefore, it’s crucial to balance urban expansion with sustainability while ensuring rural regions aren’t overlooked.
Sample 2: I suppose it is. Metropolises are economic centers and cultural hubs, so a nation benefits tremendously from them. Having more big cities not only fuels countries’ economic growth (by generating more employment, revenue from tourism, and so on) but also provides necessary housing for the world’s growing population. Of course, there are concerns about the detriments of overpopulation such as environmental pollution, but they could be addressed through good urban planning and the adoption of clean energies and vehicles.
- Detriment (n): Tổn hại, bất lợi
- Address (v): Giải quyết
2. Do you think there are some people who enjoy crowded places?
Sample 1: Yes, I believe some people take pleasure in being in crowded places. For those who are extroverted, these environments can be exciting as they thrive on social interaction and the lively atmosphere. Crowded places like festivals or markets offer a sense of energy and connection with others. Additionally, some may feel safer in busy areas, as there is a sense of community and activity. However, this preference often depends on a person’s personality and tolerance for noise.
- Extroverted: Hướng ngoại
Sample 2: Yes, definitely. There are people who enjoy crowded places like a pub or a bar, simply because they enjoy the company of others and they like the vibrant atmosphere there. These people tend to be extroverts of course since introverts often prefer being alone in the comforts of their home rather than going to social gatherings.
- Vibrant (adj): Sống động
3. Why do people go to crowded places?
Sample 1: There are a host of reasons why people visit busy locations. Many enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and the opportunity to socialise with others, especially at events like concerts or festivals. Crowded areas often offer a wider range of activities, entertainment, and shopping options that attract large groups. Additionally, some people feel a sense of excitement or energy in busy environments. For others, visiting these places may be a necessity, such as going to popular markets or public transportation hubs.
Sample 2: Well, there are plenty of reasons for that. As I’ve mentioned before, some people are extroverted and frequent crowded places to meet new people and make friends. They like the rowdy atmosphere of crowded places because there’s a social feel to it. Another reason for people to go to crowded places is to attend an event such as a wedding or concert, which is bound to have a lot of people.
- Extroverted (Adj): Hướng ngoại
- Frequent (v): Hay lui đến 1 nơi nào đấy
4. Will people use bikes more or less in cities in the future?
Sample 1: In the coming years, I believe people might opt to use bicycles more frequently in urban areas. As the urban areas grow, concerns about traffic congestion and pollution are pushing cities to promote eco-friendly transportation. Biking is a healthier and more sustainable option, and many cities are improving infrastructure by adding bike lanes and rental services. However, the increase in bike usage will also depend on how safe and convenient cycling becomes, especially in metropolitan cities.
- Metropolitan: Đô thị (hoặc thành phố lớn)
Sample 2: I mean I believe bicycles will become more prevalent in the coming years as bike-sharing schemes become more common in major cities and people become more conscious about the importance of exercise. More and more people will use bikes to commute on a daily basis; however, I doubt that bicycles will ever be able to supplant cars and motorcycles as people’s preferred means of transport since they could be quite slow and you have to expend a lot of energy while cycling.
- Bike-sharing schemes (n): Chương trình cho thuê xe đạp
- Supplant (v): Thay thế, hất cẳng
5. Will there be more or less green space in cities in the future?
Sample 1: It might be hard to believe but I think there will be more green spaces in cities. As urbanisation continues, many cities are recognising the need for parks and natural areas to improve residents’ quality of life. Green spaces help reduce pollution, provide recreational areas, and promote mental well-being. Also, there is a tendency that the governments and city planners are increasingly prioritising sustainable urban development. However, balancing the need for green areas with the demand for housing and infrastructure will be a challenge.
Sample 2: As city planners are more conscious of the importance of trees, I think future cities will incorporate more greenery into their landscape. We could witness the construction of new parks and public gardens, as well as buildings with trees growing on them. Additionally, if agricultural land becomes scarce in the future, cities may have rooftop gardens that are used to grow food to sustain their population as well.
- Incorporate (v): Kết hợp
6. Which cities are overcrowded in your country?
Well, it’s definitely Hanoi. Since it’s the capital of my country, there’s a constantly increasing influx of migrants from distant provinces coming to this city to pursue higher education, employment, etc. This has made Hanoi one of the most densely populated cities in Vietnam with severe environmental pollution and traffic congestion. There’s also the problem of housing as there’s a serious shortage of affordable housing for working-class people (because property prices are just sky-high these days and on par with real estate prices in cities like London or Los Angeles). I really hope these problems can be tackled soon.
- An influx (n): Một làn sóng nhập cư
- Sky-high (adj): Cao tận trời
- On par with: Ngang bằng với
- Real estate (n): Bất động sản
