What kind of markets are there in your country?
What is the difference between shopping with Friends and shopping alone?
Do you think small markets will disappear in the future?
Have people’s shopping habits changed in recent years?
What are the differences between shopping and street markets and big shopping malls?
1. What kind of markets are there in your country?
My country has various kinds of markets, ranging from day markets where fresh food is sold on a daily basis, to flea markets which only take place on certain days. We even have night markets in major cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An, as well as floating markets in the Mekong Delta.
- Day market (n) chợ ban ngày
- Flea market (n) chợ trời
- Night market (n) chợ đêm
- Floating market (n) chợ nổi
2. What is the difference between shopping with friends and shopping alone?
There are certainly some big differences. Firstly, going with a savvy shopper can do wonders for your budget. They can give you practice advice on what is worth buying and what is not. Some who have a sense of style would even give you really good suggestions when it comes to clothes. Regarding shopping alone, I think it is more suitable if you’re in hurry.
- A savvy shopper (n) người sành mua sắm
- Do wonders for: có ích cho
- Have a sense of style: có khiếu thời trang
3. Do you think small markets will disappear in the future?
In Vietnam, yes. The authorities are trying to clear out old, small, and run-down markets to gather the vendors into bigger and more modern buildings, where customers can not only browse more goods but also enjoy a more comfortable and convenient shopping experience. Besides, these days, people can easily buy things in supermarkets or through online markets, so I think only clean, large markets with a variety of items will continue to exist.
- Run-down (adj) cũ, xập xệ
- Browse (v) xem lướt qua
4. Have people’s shopping habits changed in recent years?
Absolutely! As I mentioned earlier, online shopping reigns supreme these days. More and more people have such hectic schedules that they don’t have much time to visit fresh markets to choose food themselves anymore. That’s why many supermarkets and stores offer home delivery services to make the shopping experience much more time-efficient and convenient, compared to the past, when it took customers a lot of time to travel back and forth.
- reign supreme: có tầm ảnh hưởng lớn nhất
- time-efficient (adj) tiết kiệm thời gian
- back and fort: đi đi lại lại
5. What are the differences between shopping at street markets and big shopping malls?
I think the most notable difference is space. While street markets tend to be crowded due to the large volume of customers and the vendors being placed quite close to each other, shopping malls are much more spacious. Additionally, the price ranges at these two places are also different. Luxurious items are typically sold in department stores at prohibitively expensive prices, whereas items at street markets are generally more affordable, as their target consumers are middle-class or lower-income people.
- Luxurious (adj) (hàng hóa) xa xỉ
- prohibitively expensive (adj) đắt cắt cổ
- target consumer (n) khách hàng mục tiêu
