Why do people prefer to watch movies in the cinema?
Do you think successful movies should have well-known actors or actresses in leading roles?
Do you think only well-known directors can create the best movies?
Do Vietnamese people prefer to watch domestic movies or foreign movies?
What are the factors that make a successful movie?
What kinds of movies do you think are successful in your country?
1. Why do people prefer to watch movies in the cinema?
I could give you some examples. Maybe it’s because they get to enjoy the wide screen and high-quality sound system. Perhaps, it gives people a reason to hang out and enjoy something together. Or it’s just that the movies there are not available at home.
2. Do you think successful movies should have well-known actors or actresses in leading roles?
Other than the lead characters, it also takes many different factors from screenplay, soundtracks, artistic approach etc. for a movie to be success. I think that the responsibility here is 100% on the director. Having stars joining your project is definitely a plus, but it’s not necessary be a prerequisite. Little-known talents deserve a chance to be brought to light, too.
- (to) be brought to light: được trao cơ hội
3. Do you think only well-known directors can create the best movies?
I suggest the same thing with the actors and actresses. I do know one particular case to use as an example: Damien-Chazelle, the creator ofWhiplash and La La Land, a two-time consecutive Oscar winner. He was very young (30-ish) for a director at that time. His short film gained attention in an indie movie festival (Sundance, I guess?) Someone then decided to invest in his musical-directing talent and the rest is history. After that, he kind of disappeared but who knows when he will return.
4. Do Vietnamese people prefer to watch domestic movies or foreign movies?
Personally, I think the whole Vietnamese audience is very easy-going andopen-minded. They or we, don’t really care about the origins as long as thequality is great. However, I think that it’ll take a long time before theVietnamese cinema industry to catch up and make a stand on internationalstages.
- make a stand: khẳng định tên tuổi, vị thế
5. What are the factors that make a successful movie?
This question does have so many possible answers. It could be the music. It could be the visual effects. It could be the humorous lines that tickle. It could literally be … anything. But in general, I think a successful one has to be a story that is very much indeed relatable. It has to show ourselves what human like us should do, should act, should look like. It’s what cinematography is all about since day one, bringing about our own reflection in a unique way.
6. What kinds of movies do you think are successful in your country?
Of course, it’s definitely going to be Koreans. Let me explain, it doesn’t have to be a particular genre like comedy or horror or whatsoever. Just Koreans and it’ll work out. As I told you earlier, the key here is “relatable”. We share so many cultural similarities with them that everything truly comes to live in front of us viewers right when the opening music kicks in. Their whole cinema industry somehow realizes this upper-hand and utilizes it as their spearhead in dominating the market. I just don’t know how they could do it.
