4. How do people give young people and old people advice?

6. Have you ever received any advice from professional people, like a doctor, a lawyer or a teacher?
1. Do you think parents should give their children advice?
Depends. Of course, one of the main responsibilities of parents is to provide children with guidance and help, especially when they are in need. If your child is having trouble with their personal relationships or does not know how to deal with a problem at work, then you, as a parent, should advise them on how to resolve those issues since a parent would likely be more experienced and wise when it comes to such issues, having dealt with those issues themselves in the past.
However, I am aware that people may disagree with their parents’ advice due to differing views, which could lead to conflict. In those instances, maybe it’s best if parents refrain from giving their children advice
- Guidance (n): sự chỉ bảo, chỉ dẫn
- Advise (v): khuyên nhủ
2. Should teachers give students advice?
Yes, but only on a certain number of issues.
If it’s something strictly related to education, such as a student’s performance in a subject or how to select the suitable field to major in college, then I think it’s perfectly fine for teachers to give their students some counsel since it’s pretty much their job to do so. But beyond that, I don’t believe it would be appropriate for teachers to advise students on personal matters, such as family issues or relationships. I think that would be unprofessional and out of bounds.
- Counsel (n): Sự tham vấn, khuyên nhủ
- Appropriate (adj): Phù hợp, đúng đắn
- Out of bounds: Vượt quá giới hạn
3. Do you think it is necessary for us to listen to a friend’s advice?
I mean, if that friend is sensitive, yes. Some friends may be offended when you ignore their advice, and the next time you come to them for some advice, they may not feel like giving it anymore. When you give someone a piece of heartfelt advice and they completely disregard it, it’s understandable to take it personally or feel frustrated.
However, if you do not agree with your friend’s advice, then you don’t really have to listen to it, as long as you communicate that clearly with your friend to avoid any misunderstanding.
- Offended (adj): Bị xúc phạm
- Disregard (v) = ignore (v): Lờ đi
- Heartfelt advice (n): Lời khuyên chân thành
4. How do people give young people and old people advice?
Well, when it comes to young people, you should try not to be condescending to them. Admittedly, some of their issues may seem a little trivial or childish, but it’s important to keep in mind that they haven’t got much experience and there is a lot of stuff they haven’t figured out yet, so we should remain patient and respectful when giving youngsters advice. The same thing applies to old people, who also deserve to be treated with respect. Some old people can be quite proud, so if you look down on them when giving advice, it may not bring the best outcome.
- Condescending (adj): Khinh thường
- Look down on (phrasal verb): khinh thường
- Keep in mind: lưu ý
- Respectful (adj): Kính trọng
- Proud (adj): kiêu ngạo
5. Who is more willing to listen to advice? And who are less willing?
Well, the people who can take someone’s advice well are the ones who are flexible. These people are open to change, they want to improve their situation, and therefore, more likely to listen and follow a piece of advice. Conservative people, on the other hand, are too rigid and headstrong to listen to anybody but themselves, and advice would be useless to them. This is especially true with old people as some of them are just too set in their ways.
- Flexible (adj): Linh hoạt
- Rigid (adj): Cứng nhắc
- Conservative (adj): Bảo thủ
- Headstrong (adj): Cứng đầu
- A piece of advice: 1 lời khuyên
- To be set in one’s way: Cứng đầu, bướng bỉnh
6. Have you ever received any advice from professional people, like a doctor, a lawyer, or a teacher?
Well, I did get some counsel from my high school teacher about what major to pursue in college. Since I was proficient in English and good at math, she encouraged me to pursue an Economics major that had something to do with foreign trade. I ended up taking her advice and got into a major specializing in international economics. The major was a suitable one for me, but it wasn’t what I was passionate about, so I changed my field after I graduated.
