Why do some companies encourage employees to compete with each other?
Why do many companies offer prizes to their customers?
What criteria should be set for students to win a particular prize?
What prizes should schools set for students?
Why should we set prizes for competitions?
Do you think competition is all about the prize?
1. Why do some companies encourage employees to compete with each other
This is a tricky one. The way I see it, competition, if used properly, can play an important role in boosting productivity and driving innovation. For employees seeking validation may do their best just to feel valued. Those who focus on career advancement can see it as a way to stand out and improve their promotion opportunities.
- career advancement: thăng tiến trong sự nghiệp
- Promotion opportunities: cơ hội thăng chức
- To seek validation: tìm kiếm sự công nhận
2. Why do some companies offer prizes to their customers
Some companies offer prizes to customers as a way to create positive associations with their brand. When customers win something for free, they tend to feel valued and appreciated, which can enhance their loyalty to the brand. Additionally, prizes, can give customers a reason to try new products they might not have considered otherwise. For example, a customer who is loyal to one skincare brand might try a competitor’s product because of a free sample and realize that it works better for them, potentially leading to a switch in preference.
- create positive associations with: tạo ra những mối liên hệ tích cực với
- Free samples: mẫu dùng thử miễn phí
3. What criteria should be set for students to win a particular prize?
The way I see it, schools should prioritize promoting virtues instead of academic excellence. For instance, prizes could reward students who actively participate in class, show initiatives in their learning, or demonstrate good behavior, like keeping their surroundings clean or consistently arriving on time. By recognizing these behaviors, more students, regardless of their learning ability, are motivated to develop good habits and become more well-mannered and responsible individuals.
- Virtues: phẩm chất đạo đức tốt
- Academic excellence: sự xuất sắc trong học thuật
- Initiatives: Sáng kiến
- well-mannered: có cư xử tốt
4. What prizes should schools set for students?
While the prizes should be tempting enough to pique their interest, it’s important that they align with the school’s goal of promoting development, skills, and positive behavior, rather than just offering expensive items. Prizes like educational opportunities, such as a free English course or a book voucher, can be both motivating and beneficial for students’ personal growth. These types of rewards encourage students to see the value in learning and self-improvement rather than just seeking material goods.
- Align with: nhất quán với
- Self-improvement: sự phát triển cá nhân
5. Why should we set prizes for competitions?
Without prizes, not many people would bother to participate in competitions in the first place, I’m afraid. Many individuals may hesitate to compete due to various fears, ranging from wasting their time and money to public embarrassment if they don’t perform well. When being reasonably incentivized, people are more likely to set aside their doubts and invest their energy into doing their best,
- Incentivized: được khích lệ
- Set aside: gạt sang bên cạnh
6. Do you think competition is all about the prize
No, not at all. To me, competition often goes beyond just winning material rewards. It’s about realizing your true potential and pushing yourself to step out of your comfort zone. For example, many marathon runners aren’t competing to win first place; instead, they feel fulfilled just by completing the race, which gives them a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, competition fosters camaraderie, especially in team settings, where working together toward a common goal strengthens relationships and builds mutual respect.
- step out of one’s comfort zone: bước ra khỏi vùng an toàn
- sense of accomplishment: một cảm giác đạt được thành tự
- Camaraderie: tinh thần đồng đội
- builds mutual respect: xây dựng sự tôn trọng lẫn nhau
