Part 3

1. Is money the only measure of success in your country?

Sample 1: The matter of finance is indeed a way to define a successful person, but I believe it’s not the only method. On the one hand, being well-off attracts attention and admiration from other people. This means that a person who possesses a lucrative income tends to be taken better care of and receive love wherever they go, which can be called success to certain people. However, other people would regard successful people are those who have extraordinary achievements or are dedicated housewives or husbands.

  • define: định nghĩa
  • well-off: dư dả, giàu có
  • a lucrative income: nguồn thu nhập hậu hĩnh
  • extraordinary achievements: thành tựu xuất chúng

Sample 2: Well yes. Generally, I think that this case happens not only in Vietnam but also in other countries. Money is a great tool to achieve lots of things in life. For example, it can help children to pay for quality education. Most private schools are claimed to provide great environment but require exorbitant tuition fees, right? Or we can get the best service if we have enough money to pay for the suit room in hotels, business-class seats for flights. Of course, there are also other factors such as fame or social status included in terms of being successful.

However, without money, anything else would become meaningless. Nobody wants to have 10 million subscribers on their Youtube channel without earning income from that, right!

  • exorbitant tuition fees: học phí đắt đỏ
  • meaningless: vô nghĩa

2. How do you define whether one is a successful person?

As I said earlier, money is usually considered as an effective measure for success by many people. I am not an exception. However, in addition to money, I believe that other important aspects of success. For example, a person cannot be called successful if they have nothing but money.

A successful doctor is someone who not only earns a great deal from their job but also achieves certain levels in their career ladders. He or she also has to be an expert in the field and is respected or recognized by institutions, patients and co-workers. Moreover, if a person seems to be successful but deep down, they always have fears or insecurities or emotional struggles and mental health problems, I don’t think that person can exemplify success.

  • career ladders: thang sự nghiệp
  • emotional struggles: đấu tranh cảm xúc
  • exemplify: làm gương

3. Is there a contradiction between success and happiness?

Sample 1: Yes and no. At its core, both success and happiness are the factors that bring a sense of satisfaction to us. In certain circumstances, there is a strong correlation between these two concepts. When one is successful, they are content with life, thereby being happier. Similarly, when one is delighted, he or she is given the motivation to thrive. On the other hand, being overly successful might create stress, which is a direct enemy of happiness. This is also the case when one is too fulfilled and loses his or her reasons to achieve higher.

  • At its core: về bản chất
  • a sense of satisfaction: cảm giác thoả mãn
  • a strong correlation: mối tương quan mạnh mẽ
  • concepts: khái niệm
  • content: hài lòng
  • delighted: vui vẻ, hạnh phúc
  • fulfilled: viên mãn, đủ đầy

Sample 2: I don’t think so. I know that in the past, people used to believe that you have to pay a price for being successful, such as you cannot have love or happiness. This is quite reasonable since if a person is extremely successful in their career, it means that they have to prioritize their job over other aspects in life such as relationships.

However, I think this case only happens temporarily. In the long term, if we want to actually become successful, I think we need to figure out the formula of work-life balance. Actually, they do not contradict each other. Instead, they support each other. For example, without relationships, we cannot find someone to share our stress and pressure, and therefore we keep working with negative things stuck in our head. I do not think that is healthy as well as effective. Yeah, so to sum up, it’s hard to be both successful and happy at the same time. However, it’s a must if we actually want to gain something in life, and I mean in the long run.

  • contradict: mâu thuẫn

4. Is it easy to succeed in the national tests in your country?

I would say no. In Vietnam, national tests are the most challenging to all test takers. Since these tests are nationwide, Vietnamese students usually have to spend the whole year taking extra classes and cramming for the tests. Also, the aspects provided in the tests are very diverse, addressing different matters in life. This requires students to equip themselves carefully with a profound background knowledge, an ability to comprehend and analyze the problems and fast reaction to pass the exams with flying colors.

  • cramming for: học nhồi nhét
  • diverse: đa dạng
  • a profound background knowledge: kiến thức nền sâu rộng
  • pass the exams with flying colors: vượt qua bài kiểm tra với điểm số cao

5. What are the factors that influence students’ grades at school?

There are a host of determinants that might lead to changes in students’ grades at school. These include peer pressure as this creates motivation for students to try their utmost in maximizing their scores. Parental support is also a great source of encouragement for students. However, negative criticism or corporal punishment and the likes are likely to deter students from giving it the best shot

  • determinants: yếu tố
  • peer pressure: áp lực đồng trang lứa
  • try their utmost: cố gắng hết sức
  • Parental support: sự hỗ trợ từ phía cha mẹ
  • negative criticism: chỉ trích tiêu cực
  • corporal punishment: phạt đòn roi
  • giving it the best shot: cố gắng hết sức
