What are the advantages and disadvantages of old people using smartphones?
1. What are the advantages of smartphones these days?
As modern gadgets, smartphones serve as a useful tool for many daily activities, ranging from calling, texting to snapping photos. Back in the days, these were considered incredible, but with the advent of advanced technology, like improved software capabilities, faster processors, users can do all these things at the push of a button. On top of that, other functionalities, such as GPS for navigation, location-based services, and online payment, are also incorporated in a smartphone that makes it one of the most significant technological breakthroughs of all time.
- with the advent of advanced technology: với sự có mặt của công nghệ hiện đại
- software capabilities: công nghệ phần mềm
- faster processors: bộ xử lý nhanh
- at the push of a button: một cách dễ dàng
- be incorporated in something: được tích hợp vào cái gì đó
2. Do young and old people use phones in the same way?
There are some distinctions in how they use phones. First, the young tend to make full use of them, especially for social media, gaming and working, while the older may use them for calling, texting and accessing information only. This is because some of the elderly didn’t grow up with technology, and they have less experience with using phones than their counterparts, so some of them struggle, or even consider themselves technophobe when it comes to phone use.
Another thing is that the time youngsters spend on phones seems longer, whereas the old people may not. The reason comes from the fact that the former have now become dependent on phones for their daily needs, so the young can use hours surfing the Internet or editing photos. This may not be found in the old who favor other traditional means of media, such as newspapers or TV.
- make full use: tận dụng
- grow up with: lớn lên cùng với
- technophobe: người sợ công nghệ
- favor something: thích hơn
3. Many people think mobile phones can be annoying at times. Can you give any examples of that?
There are many cases in which phones become a nuisance to users and people around. The first example includes constant distractions from notifications, pissing people off sometimes when they try to stay focused. Constant updates, and an endless stream of content from social media, for instance, can pull them from important tasks and decrease productivity by encouraging mindless scrolling. Another thing is that phones can distance people away from each other. When users are glued to their screens during a face-to-face conversation, others may feel that they are not as important, giving rise to an invisible wall between them and screwing up their relationship.
- nuisance: thứ gây khó chịu
- piss somebody off: làm ai đó bực bình
- stay focused: đang tập trung vào thứ gì đó
- mindless scrolling: lướt không mục đích
- be glued to: dán mắt vào
- screw up their relationships: phá huỷ mối quan hệ
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of old people using smartphones?
Every coin has two sides, and so does using mobile phones, especially for elderly individuals. The bright side is that modern devices keep them on top of things. With just a few simple clicks, old users can access the ocean of information about news, health, hobbies and others available out there thanks to many search engines. Smartphones also offer various services, such as banking, ride-hailing, shopping, which simplifies many daily activities. That said, their drawbacks shouldn’t be overlooked. Some of the old people may find it complicated to use their gadgets owing to the lack of familiarity with technological advances, causing the difficulty in fully utilizing the features. Second, because many of them are not so tech-savvy, they are more likely to be vulnerable to online scams, especially in the case of accidentally clicking on suspicious links, leading to annoyance or even data breach.
- keep them on top of things: biết về những gì đang xảy ra
- ride-hailing: gọi xe qua ứng dụng
- utilize something: sử dụng cái gì đó
- tech-savvy: rành công nghệ
- vulnerable to: dễ bị ảnh hưởng bởi cái gì đó
- suspicious link: đường liên kết đáng ngờ
- data breach: mất thông tin
