1. Bài mẫu (Sample)

Last month, I was at a supermarket buying a tie, and I received excellent service from James, a sales assistant there. He looks quite athletic, tall and lean, with clear fair skin and prescription glasses, giving off an ‘innocent bookworm’ type of charm.

Right from the get-go, James came across as being very attentive and courteous: seeing me scratching my head and having a confused expression in front of the tie rack, he came over and asked if I needed his assistance. He listened intently to my description of what I was after: a regular tie whose color is complementary to my white dress shirt and navy blue suit, then took out the perfect one – a deep red tie that visually pops. Apart from making this tasteful choice of accessory for me, James guided me to tie the tie myself. He slowly demonstrated the steps so I could follow: from draping the tie around my neck, crossing the wide end over the front of the skinny end and turning it back to make a loop, to pulling the wide end up through the loop and tightening the knot. He repeated the sequence several times until I remembered it.

Throughout our exchange, I was very particular, fussy even, asking a million questions before making the purchase, but at no point did James seem annoyed. He calmly and patiently explained to me not only the practices of protecting the delicate fabric from wear and tear, like hand-washing rather than machine-washing it, but also how to return the product if I later spot a design defect. At checkout, he talked me through the controls of the automatic kiosk, which I didn’t know, so I could ring up the tie and complete the transaction. Overall, it was a pleasant shopping experience. I actually wrote a glowing review for James’ customer service on the supermarket’s facebook fanpage because I thought it was super proper.

Part 3:

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of shopping in small shops?

One positive of buying at a small store is people can negotiate the prices down, as these stores can price-match other places selling lower than them to stay competitive. Another benefit is their swift actions to rectify problems, like store managers can be present to check over returned packages and offer an exchange immediately. However, these establishments are often limited in both the types of items in stock and the selection, not to mention the possible lower quality because they are local businesses, as opposed to large supermarkets open in many places, where the standards are higher. These are the reasons many Vietnamese customers prefer shopping malls.

  • standards: tiêu chuẩn
  • packages: kiện hàng

2. Why do some people not like shopping in small shops?

As I mentioned earlier, small shops usually have a limited range of products and may not meet the same standards as larger retail chains. On top of that, prices are sometimes higher because these businesses still have to cover their business overheads, which discourages some customers.

  • overheads: chi phí vận hành kinh doanh

3. What are the differences between online shopping and in-store shopping?

One difference, and perhaps an advantage of online shopping compared with brick-and-mortar stores, is that it can be done from the comfort of one’s home, with the packages delivered to their doorstep. Another is that the items can be competitively priced, since the business overheads are lower, without the costs of hiring a physical location.

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of shopping online?

As already discussed, online shopping offers convenience and lower prices thanks to reduced overheads. However, customers cannot physically check the products, which means the quality may not meet their expected standards when the packages arrive.

5. Can consumption drive economic growth?

It definitely can be the catalyst for economic growth. Higher consumption means more sales for businesses and, accordingly, more taxes for the government. As profits increase, businesses can scale their operations. Larger businesses and a larger amount of tax generated collectively expand the size of the economy.
