4. How can we know what to do when we want to learn something new?
5. Do you think ‘showing’ is a better way than ‘telling’ in education?
6. Do people in your country like to watch videos to learn something?
1. What practical skills can young people teach old people?
Hmm, I guess in this day and age, skills related to technology should be considered useful and practical, so that’s definitely what we as youngsters can teach people around our parents’ or grandparents’ age. I mean with our tech-savvy expertise, we can teach them how to utilize technological advancements to better their living standards. On top of that, I think older generations might find it interesting to learn modern international etiquette in this world of globalization where conventional ways of behavior from their time can be outmoded.
- To tell you the truth: nói thật thì
- Etiquette: phép xã giao, lễ nghi
- Conventional: thuộc về truyền thống
- Outmoded: lỗi thời, không còn được ưa chuộng, không còn hữu dụng
2. What skills can young people teach old people besides technology?
From my point of view, besides helping the old to be computer literate, the younger generation may also give advice on language skills as we now have many different methods to learn a foreign language effectively that the old might not be familiar with. Moreover, without any doubt, youngsters nowadays are also adept at starting businesses and making them thrive with their creativity, determination, ability to think outside the box and other entrepreneurial skills, which should definitely be taught to older entrepreneurs.
- computer literate: người biết sử dụng máy vi tính
- give advice: đưa ra lời khuyên
- adept at: giỏi về
- think outside the box: Suy nghĩ vượt khuôn khổ
- entrepreneurial skills: kỹ năng khởi nghiệp
3. How can young people teach old people skills?
I don’t think the traditional way of learning and educating, you know, in a classroom with a youngster as a teacher and some of the elderly as learners, with some books or materials, would be the ideal choice here. From my point of view, this can be done in a quite relaxed manner with people hanging out and having chit-chat while sharing their experiences. For instance, in a business, managers can set up workshops or weekend outings for both senior and entry-level employees to take part in and teach each other what they are good at. The most important thing is the manner of the young, they need to explain everything with respect, patience and willingness.
4. How can we know what to do when we want to learn something new?
When we have no idea what to do, we’d better turn to experts to ask for help. I mean they have already overcome that confusing stage and gained expertise in those fields so they would know exactly what we need to do to reach their level. Just like when we go to school, we learn and receive guidelines from competent teachers. In addition, the Internet could also be of great help. To be more specific, we can join some Facebook groups and seek for answers there, or look up detailed steps to learn skills on websites.
5. Do you think ‘showing’ is a better way than ‘telling’ in education?
Well, as an educator, although I am aware that there can be various types of learners such as auditory, verbal or kinaesthetic ones, I still believe that the majority of people actually learn better with the aid of diagrams, maps, images or videos. Illustration-based materials can help students pick up abstract concepts more quickly because they can actually see what is going on right in front of them. Moreover, seeing is believing, with the help of pictures and short movies when teachers are delivering lessons, it’s less challenging for students to comprehend, for example, the formation of the Earth, the process of producing consumer goods or how placebos work to improve our health. In short, yes, “showing” is more effective than teachers talking continuously.
- Illustration-based materials: tài liệu dựa trên (tranh) minh họa
- seeing is believing: trăm nghe không bằng một thấy.
- To deliver lessons: giảng bài
6. Do people in your country like to watch videos to learn something?
Definitely yes, I mean we can easily see the significant growth in the number of users on Tiktok – a social networking website focusing on uploading and watching videos. To be more exact, Vietnamese people spend quite a lot of time browsing short videos of a hashtag “learn on Tik Tok” just so they can have a grasp of many fields, ranging from astronomy or literature to math or business development, which for sure can broaden their horizons.
- have a grasp of: có hiểu biết về
- broaden their horizons: mở rộng hiểu biết
