1. Bài mẫu (Sample)
I recently had my first ever class of painting with acrylics. It was part of a performance review event of my company last quarter, held on Wednesday, September 25th. There was a huge turnout, about 50 people, filling the workshop space.
To my relief, several instructors from an art studio were present to guide the attendees through the steps. We were supplied with an apron, canvas stretched over a wooden square frame, a palette knife, a plastic plate with dabs of acrylic paint on. We scanned a QR code on the projection screen and were directed to a youtube playlist of different landscape paintings to replicate. Sounds unoriginal, but for first-timers like myself, it was already a feat if I pulled off.
Feeling up to the challenge, I played a clip, and watched intently to follow. I first had to blend the colors. Using three primary colors: red, yellow and blue, I learnt that I can get orange from red and yellow, purple from red and blue, and green from blue and yellow. These are the secondary colors, and if I continue mixing, it will give me the tertiary colors. Seeing the paint change colors was like magic to me! With the paint ready, I picked it up in the bottom of the palette knife blade, and scraped across the painting surface until I had covered it.
I was painting a sunset over the horizon, so my subjects were the sun, glowing like a golden ball and sinking about a third into the baby-blue ocean water. The ocean currents foam up as they hit the shore, and the sky is a light pink color, very soft, very tender and dreamy. Admittedly, it would be a stretch to say I produced this painting myself, as I had the instructor touch it up to look presentable. All in all, working on this painting has been a real pleasure: it was definitely tastefully done.

Part 3:
1. Why are some people unwilling to try new things?
Some people are hesitant, if not resistant, to changes, because the experiences can be daunting. Take mastering IELTS writing, for example. It takes blood, sweat and tears: not only the mental strain of unlearning wrong notions/practices but also months and years of amending drafts so that they are up to standard. But I guess at the end, it’s all worth it, so the quote ‘no pain, no gain’ applies here.
2. Why are some people keen on doing dangerous activities?
People who are hooked on dangerous activities are often adventurous souls. They are after the thrills and floods of adrenaline of those experiences. Parkour traceurs often say they feel incredible after successfully executing a dangerous move, like a double or triple somersaults with twists and landing on two feet.
- Somersaults: cú nhảy lộn nhào, quay đầu.
3. Do you think that children adapt to new things more easily than adults?
It is often assumed that younger people, especially those before the age of puberty, are most capable of learning, since they are much quicker on the uptake, evidenced by the commonly used simile of their brains being like sponges, soaking up knowledge. Explanation varies from their ‘brain neuroplasticity’, or the readiness to commit new concepts to memory, being the strongest at the time, to lower self-consciousness about making mistakes. Still, this is just a hypothesis, as the evidence is not clear-cut. In my view, there isn’t a best period, as adults, in the right instructional environment for their age: analytical, evaluative and autonomy-rich, can outperform young learners.
- Puberty: giai đoạn dậy thì.
