Are there benefits when one person is interested in another person? Why?
Do you think people are more selfish or self-centered now than in the past?
What benefits can people get if they are self-centered?

1. Do you think old people and young people can share interests?

Absolutely. I think old and young people can have some interests in common, though their perspective and life experience may be very different. For example, many movies and tv shows of different genres appeal to a wide audience regardless of age such as Next top model and The Voice. Besides, activities like fitness and community service are not only fun but also able to bring generations closer and create a sense of shared purpose among those involved.

  • have something in common (v) có điểm chung về…

2. What can old people teach young people?

To me, the young can learn from older people a wide variety of valuable lessons and skills that come from their rich life experiences. Those skills range from those crucial in everyday life such as cooking and household management to ones that are practical at the workplace like interpersonal and networking skills. What’s more, older people can also teach the young how to take care of themselves and how to deal with health emergencies, which may come in handy when they grow more independent.

3. Is it easy for young people and old people to make friends with each other?

In my opinion, making friends across generations can come with its challenges, but it’s definitely possible and often very rewarding. Initially, differences in interests, communication styles, and life experiences might seem like barriers. However, these differences can also be the foundation for meaningful connections and mutual learning, because just like any other kinds of relationships, young people and older individuals can bond over shared activities such as hobbies, sports, or community service, as well as mutual understanding

  • come with challenges (v) có những thách thức
  • mutual understanding (n) sự thấu hiểu lẫn nhau

4. Are there benefits when one person is interested in another person? Why?

Sure. Being interested in each other fosters a long-term companionship between two people. They tend to feel more willing to share hobbies and stories with those whom they grow their interest in, knowing that their stories would also fascinate the other person. Nevertheless, it’s important to not be too indulged in them, so much so that you can be manipulated as they may try to take advantage of you. Sometimes keeping a bit of a distance from other people can do you good.

  • foster a long-term companionship (v) thúc đẩy một mối quan hệ lâu dài
  • manipulate someone (v) thao túng (ai đó)
  • keep a bit of a distance from someone (v) giữ một chút khoảng cách (với ai đó)

5. Do you think people are more selfish or self-centered now than in the past?

To be honest, I’m quite on the fence about that. People appear more selfish or self-centered today due to the rise of social media and a culture that often emphasizes individual success and personal branding. This can create the impression that people are more focused on themselves. However, there still are many instances of increased empathy, community involvement, and global awareness among younger generations. For example, many young people are actively involved in movements related to climate change, social justice, and equality. They participate in community service, volunteer work, and support various charitable causes.

  • the rise of social media (n) sự phổ biến của mạng xã hội
  • personal branding (n) xây dựng hình ảnh cá nhân
  • social justice (n) công bằng xã hội
  • community service (n) dịch vụ cộng đồng

6. What benefits can people get if they are self-centered?

There are quite a lot of interesting advantages I would say. Being self-centered allows people to focus on their own goal without worrying about others’ needs. Taking into account others’ needs is what people should do, however, it can sometimes distract them from achieving their goal and thus may affect their personal and professional success. Besides, self-centeredness allows people to grow a sense of self that can later on translate into personal pride and satisfaction.

  • take into account one’s needs (v) xem xét, cân nhắc tới nhu cầu (của ai đó)
