1. Do you have any friends from other countries?
Not a lot, but I do have some friends that I picked up during my CELTA course. They are all really interesting people with numerous talents, a positive mindset and a great sense of humor.
2. Do you find any differences in that culture from what you have learned from books?
Not really. As an English teacher, besides imparting knowledge and learning about the language, I also need to expand my horizons about another country’s culture, so I quite accustomed to it. From what I learnt from books and social media, they are not that different. But I do feel like there are certain stereotypes that people tend to portray about foreigners on social media. One, for example, is that Americans are not really bright – which I think is not true, because I’ve met a lot of incredibly talented and intelligent Americans. They were literally walking encyclopedias.

3. How important is knowing about the culture before you travel?
Very. Without being informed about a foreign culture, it is very easy for a person to come off as offensive. For example, when one travels to a different country, they have to be very careful about making certain gestures, because they can mean one thing in their home country but a totally different thing, possibly slightly to extremely offensive or vulgar, in another country. It is very important to ‘do as the Romans do in Rome’.

4. What are the disadvantages of working for an international company?
Being a worker in a foreign corporation does have numerous advantages, but one of the drawbacks has got to be discrimination. This does not mean that all international companies are guilty of this, but there have been numerous cases where Asians or minority groups suffer from discrimination in foreign working places. Another disadvantage would be the difference in working hours. In Vietnam, there is a fixed schedule for office jobs. However, in international companies, the working hours may be more flexible, and employees might be required to work from midnight until early morning, which for some, can be quite a hassle.
