Are there any difficulties when people grow plants in cities?

1. Is it bad behavior for people to look at their phones during a meal?

It depends. If you’re eating in solitude then it’s probably fine to look at your phone for some entertainment, such as watching a movie or YouTube video. However, it might be considered rude to be on your phone when you’re in the company of others, especially during family dinners or with friends. You’re supposed to be talking with other people in those social situations, not be on your phone all the time.

  • Solitude (n): Sự cô độc
  • In the company of others: Cùng với người khác

2. Why do people like to have a big meal at traditional festivals or big events?

Well having big meals is like a time-honored form of celebration. During grand occasions like weddings, celebrating with delicious food just makes it more joyous. It’s a way for people to have an occasion to splurge more money and have something good at big events.

  • Joyous (Adj): vui vẻ, vui tươi

3. Do most people prefer vegetables bought from the supermarket or grown at home?

Well, I think most of us would go for supermarket vegetables because not many people have gardens at home to grow their own carrots, cabbages, things like that. Besides, supermarket vegetables are reasonably priced and fairly clean anyway, given the strict regulations on food safety the government imposes. However, I suppose some people who live in the countryside or on a farm do prefer to grow their own vegetables because they have the means to do it and deem their vegetables safer than those of supermarkets (because there’s less chemicals in their vegetables I guess)

  • Regulations (n): Quy định

4. Are there any difficulties when people grow plants in cities?

There are countless challenges. First you got the lack of space as urban planning doesn’t allow for big vacant lots to grow plants. The variety of plants that are able to thrive in urban environments is also limited (you obviously can’t grow any fruit-bearing plants). Lastly, city-dweller tend to be too busy to properly take good care of their plants

  • Urban planning (n): Quy hoạch đô thị

5. What plants can people grow in cities?

Well, there’s small plants that don’t take up much space like peppers and lettuce, which could be grown in rooftop gardens or balconies. People could also grow low-maintenance plants like cactuses, which do not require much care and attention. Finally, there are flowers that beautify people’s homes like roses, sunflowers, and lilies. These are fairly easy to take care up and can be grown in in-door gardens.

  • Take up (phrasal verb): Chiếm
  • Low-maintance (adj): Not needy: không cần thiết

6. Do people in your country grow plants at home?

I think some people do have rooftop gardens or several flower pots on their balconies. Generally speaking, I don’t think gardening is a popular pastime leisure in Vietnam because houses here aren’t that spacious and only those living in the countryside or the suburbs have gardens to grow plants

  • Pastime leisure (adj): a hobby: một sở thích
