1. What languages can you speak?
As a bilingual, I can speak both my mother tongue, which is Vietnamese, and the language of global communication – English. In fact, I did a degree in English Language Teaching, and have been employed as a teacher of this language for a few years now.

2. What languages would you like to learn in the future?
I’d like to pick up Mandarin, which is a dialect of Chinese, and Spanish. Since they’re also languages of international trade like English, mastering them would open many avenues for me down the line career-wise, with handsome salaries. One of my friends made six figures last year as a Vietnamese-Chinese translator.
3. How do you learn a foreign language?
I learn a foreign tongue by mimicry. I often watch movies in the target language, so that I’m exposed to an authentic version of it, and then repeat what the actors and actresses say verbatim. Thanks to this approach, my English pronunciation has visibly improved in terms of its intelligibility.

4. How are languages taught and learned in your school?
In my school, the teaching and learning of languages is generally organized following the teacher-centered approach, like teachers would dictate all the content, materials and activities. However, this method is being reexamined, as the opposite solution – student-centered learning, with instructors sitting back and letting students take ownership of what and how they study, appears to be more fruitful, helping more students hit band 7+ in the IELTS Exam.
