4. Is the library still necessary? Why?

1. What are the most popular & least popular apps in China?

To be perfectly candid, I am not a person who is very well-versed in the world of Chinese social media. Therefore, I cannot provide a proper assessment of what are the least used applications in China. However, one can hazard a guess that based on the trends and very long & serious discussions from politicians in numerous countries about it, Tiktok is currently the biggest platform in China. However, Tiktok seems to be more diverse when it comes to content. Tiktok has accumulated 1.5 billion users since 2016, which is an astronomically high number for a platform that is so young.

  • Candid (adj) = bluntly honest = frank: thẳng thật
Candor (n): sự thăng thật, thật thà
  • Well-versed (adj): biết nhiều; có chuyên môn, kiến thức sâu

2. What’s the difference between The Internet & television?

The web provides a vast array, and along with it, a more diverse use of content, whereas content on TV is more streamlined and official. On the Internet, people can go online and get access to not only visual content, but also articles, academic readings and even forums for communication. However, because it is so diverse, people have to learn how to filter information on their own so as to avoid fake news. When it comes to TV, the content is less diverse. Unless people pay for a TV package that has entertainment channels or programs, aside from news and some add-ons, TV simply cannot keep up with the Internet’s speed of content delivery.

  • A vast array = a wide range = a diverse range: 1 mảng rộng; 1 tập hợp bao gồm
  • Filter (v) : sàng lọc

3. Why do some people like to read the news on the Internet instead of getting it from TV?

I guess that most people nowadays tend to get information online as it is quicker and easier to access. For instance, a lot of people rely on social media platforms such as Twitter, Reddit, Facebook to not only get news, but to also share and talk about said news. Moreover, people can go on Youtube and watch news videos from channels that are dedicated to specific types of topics. Another reason is that TV only provides the types of information that are considered to be “safe” or “filtered” so as to engage with as many demographics as possible as well as avoid controversy.

4. Is the library still necessary? Why?

From my point of view, due to digitalization, the diminishment of libraries is sadly inevitable. My reasoning is that the Internet provides a quicker and more dynamic way to access and consume books. People can literally go online and buy a book without any need to go to the library and rent them. While it is true that there are people who still go to the libraries and there have been discussions on keeping libraries due to the integrity of book consumption and book maintenance, and I fully support the idea that libraries can be kept as vintage rooms or put in museums, not everyone has easy access to bookstores & libraries, thus moving online is the optimal solution.

  • Digitalization (n): số hóa
  • Inevitable (adj): không thể tránh khỏi
Inevitability (n): sự không tránh khỏi
  • Optimal (adj): tối ưu

5. What kinds of people would still go to the library to read and study?

I can think of a few types of people. Because the library is a haven for print media, people from the previous generations still visit the libraries from time to time so as to read old books which were hits and best-sellers in their time. These people may have problems with reading things on screen, so I deduce that they also have bad eyesight. In addition, people who work in academia often access the archives as well so as to dig deep and look for older materials for their research.

  • Academia (n): ngành giáo dục, ngành nghiên cứu; hàn lâm; học viện

6. What are the differences between old people and young people when they use the internet?

For one, the older generation tends to go online solely for work purposes. The reason is that a lot of adults and middle-aged people started using the Internet when they already were working, and back then, The Internet was mostly used for sending emails, messaging and served as indirect infomercials. There were barely any entertainment websites back in the mid-90s and early 2000s and social media is a relatively new thing for our generation. In contrast, because the young generation grows up with a diverse range of entertainment websites and social media, adolescents and even children’s online experience is more diverse. While the younger generation is more dynamic in how they use The Internet at longer times, the older generation is more goal-oriented and concise in their usage, which is mostly for work.
