Are foreign movies popular in Vietnam? (Phim nước ngoài có phổ biến ở Việt Nam không?)
Is it important that a country has its own movies? (Việc một quốc gia có một những bộ phim riêng của mình có quan trọng không?)
1. Are films a waste of money?
I can’t imagine why anyone would have this opinion. It’s parts and parcels of the entertainment industry which are indispensable.
What’s so good about movies is that it allows us to escape our mundane daily lives, it takes us to a different world, even just for a moment.
Like, we’re basically under lockdown now in Hanoi and can’t do the travelling. To quench our wanderlust, we can watch some travel films and enjoy the marvellous aerial shots of the magnificent landscapes.
- parcel (n): phụ kiện
- indispensable (adj): cần thiết
- mundance (adj): trần gian
2. Are movie stars important to a movie?
Yes and no.
If the script and production are strong enough, a movie can still break box-office records. Take Star Wars as an example. For the first film, the studio famously cast some pretty new faces, but it still managed to take the world by storm and single-handedly launch the careers of these unknowns.
Obviously, it goes without saying, casting a recognizable face can add tonnes of value to the production, like increasing the chance of having a theatrical release but it’s not essential.
- box-office records: kỷ lục phòng vé
- take the world by storm: gây bão
- single-handedly: một tay (làm gì)
3. Are foreign movies popular in Vietnam?
I wouldn’t say so. The majority of the population in Vietnam aren’t fluent in foreign languages, not to mention the fact that they are not particularly attuned to foreign cultures, which could be a deal-breaker.
That being said, youngsters in recent years have been showing a greater interest in foreign drama movies, especially Korean and the US. Netflix original series – Squid game from South Korea is all the rage these days.
- attuned: hòa nhập
- deal breaker: một yếu tố bất lợi
4. Is it important that a country has its own movies?
It’s impossible to overstate the significance of developing the national film industry. Not only does it help promote the nation’s identity and cultural values, but it also benefits the economy greatly.
Coming from a non-English speaking country, I’d say that all these period dramas about aristocratic families and the monarchy in the UK make me and my friends want to visit Britain and admire stunning castles and forts there.
- overstate: nói quá
- aristocratic families: gia đình quý tộc
