1. Bài mẫu (Sample)
Let me preface this by saying that I’m sort of a bookworm, a word here that means I like to browse the internet and comb through local shops for titles new and old, buy them, and take forever to read them. There’s one place that sticks out to me though, called The Shop Around the Corner, which surprisingly is situated around a corner.
I remember stumbling into it on a rainy day, and it was like stepping into a storybook. The shelves are stacked to the brim with fiction, fantasies, and all that jazz. And in the middle of it all was this lovely woman, Kathleen, who was reading to children, mesmerizing them. Turns out she is the owner of the store that had been passed down from her mother, and fortunately, she inherited more than the ownership. Kathleen also has this warm smile and spot-on recommendation; it’s like she can read your mind even when your thoughts and needs are like chicken scratch. As I continued to frequent the shop every chance I got, I learned more about Kathleen. She seems to be capable of anything! From managing inventory, to hosting story time, she never runs out of hats to wear — or should I say, she knows how to wear many hats!
For her, selling books is not just a livelihood, it is her life. Every day, she preserves a piece of her childhood, a remnant of her mother’s legacy, a layered soul of the community. I suppose this is what happens when you truly love your family and your business.

Part 3:
1. Would you like to start a family business?
Absolutely not. That would be a combination of the two things I dread the most: family and business. They both require hard work, which I do not possess. They both require round-the-clock care, which I cannot deliver. And they both induce stress, which I would like to steer clear of.
- Round-the-clock: suốt ngày đêm
- Steer clear of: tránh xa
2. Would you like to work for a family business?
To be honest, this business model often gets a bad rap where I live, so I would play it safe and say no. On top of that, it doesn’t make much sense to me, working for a family that’s not part of the royal family. I mean, why would I help build an empire if I’m not part of it?
And let’s not get into details anymore — I don’t want to provoke the wrong crowd, so let’s just move on to the next question.
- Get a bad rap: bị mang tiếng xấu
- Play it safe: chọn cách an toàn
- Not part of the royal family: không thuộc nhóm chính / không có quyền lợi
3. Why do some people choose to start their own company?
I suppose the common factors include profits and autonomy. For one thing, it is general knowledge that the boss makes the big bucks, so why would anyone with financial incentives be content with loose changes when they could tap into the source? For another thing, some of us are born without a compliant bone in our body, which inhibits a career with helicopter supervisors. But then again, since I’m no entrepreneur here, I’m just guessing.
- Tap into the source: khai thác nguồn lợi chính
- Compliant: biết nghe lời, dễ bảo
- Helicopter supervisors: sếp kiểm soát quá mức
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses?
Oh boy, these questions got me talking through my hat today. The most candid answer I’ve got is that I haven’t got a clue! I don’t have one, nor have I worked for one. But sure, for the sake of the test, let me humor you for a moment.
Say, you’re building a business that may or may not last generations, you’re ensuring that your children will have a trade to fall back on. On the flip side, though, there is a high chance that they will flunk it, and all your efforts will go down the drain.
- Talk through my hat: nói linh tinh
- Go down the drain: đổ sông đổ biển / uổng công
5. What family businesses do you know in your local area?
All sorts of things, really. I would say the most popular and persevering are local diners. I’m not talking about fancy restaurants with high tables and chairs, but the shabby ones where you crouch on a plastic stool and hold onto ceramic bowls old enough to drive. You may find them in close proximity to any wet markets.
- Old enough to drive: cũ kỹ (nói đùa)
6. What makes a successful family business?
A good daughter-in-law. Just kidding. But no really. I’ve heard so many stories of families that had it going on for them for a while, until they cannot find a successor. Either their sons gamble away their fortune or tweak the recipe one too many times — you know how the story goes. So I would say, success requires successors.
- Have it going on: đang làm ăn tốt
- Tweak: chỉnh sửa nhỏ
- Successors: người kế thừa
