Furthermore, while there were consistently more 15-year-old boys than girls, females aged 75 consistently outnumbered their male counterparts in both years.
Looking first at the overall trends, the total population of the UK grew substantially, rising from 36.1 million in 1911 to 56.1 million in 2011. In terms of age demographics, the proportion of 15-year-olds in the population saw a gradual decline, falling from 1.86% to 1.23% over the century. In stark contrast, the share of the elderly population, specifically those aged 75, experienced a significant jump. This group’s proportion nearly tripled, climbing from a mere 0.23% in 1911 to 0.70% in 2011.
