Where can senior citizens start learning to code if they want to?

1. Is it important for people to learn new things?

Absolutely! I think it’s crucial to regularly update and expand your knowledge. There are several reasons for this, the main one being that you can apply what you learn to different aspects of your life. For example, one might think taking up a new sport is just about staying healthy and keeping in shape. However, while learning a sport, you’re also working on your gross motor skills. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to hone your interpersonal and teamwork skills when playing with others. The same goes for knitting or sewing, where you get to improve your fine motor skills, concentration and patience.  Having said that, it’s worth bearing in mind that we should be selective about what to learn. We don’t want to end up investing time and money in things that won’t benefit us, do we?

  • Gross motor skills: kỹ năng vận động thô
  • Interpersonal skills: kỹ năng tương tác giữa người với người
  • Fine motor skills: kỹ năng vận động tinh
  • Bear in mind that… (idiom): remember that…

2. Should adults learn new things from their experience?

I don’t see why not. Learning from experience is one of the best ways to grow as an individual. You can learn from both successes and failures, as well as from both pleasant and unpleasant experiences. When you learn from your achievements, you can track your progress and determine what you need to do to keep improving. Similarly, failures reveal the mistakes you’ve made, helping you understand what went wrong and what you need to work on. All in all, it’s highly advisable to learn from your own experience.

  • Advisable (adj): được khuyên làm

3. Should the government pay for the courses that people would like to take after retirement?

I think it depends on one’s financial situation as well as the course fees. If a senior citizen can afford to pay for a course they want to enroll in, it may not be necessary for the government to provide financial support. However, if that senior cannot afford it, a subsidy from the government should be considered. Likewise, the affordability of the course fees for most older people should also be taken into consideration. For example, courses like languages or flower arranging often have low fees, so it may not be the government’s responsibility to cover those costs. On the other hand, vocational or university courses can be much more expensive for many elderly people, so governmental subsidies would definitely be helpful in those cases.

  • Senior citizen = senior (n): an older person (người cao tuổi)
  • Subsidy (n): khoảng trợ cấp, phụ cấp
  • Affordability (n): sự phải chăng (về giá cả)
  • Take something into consideration (idiom): cân nhắc, xem xét điều gì đó

4. Where can senior citizens start learning to code if they want to?

Senior citizens have several options if they want to start learning to code. First, they can enroll in online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or edX, which offer a wide range of beginner-friendly coding courses. These platforms often provide flexible learning schedules, allowing seniors to learn at their own pace. Libraries and community centers may also offer free coding workshops for seniors. Moreover, many YouTube tutorials and free coding websites like Codecademy and freeCodeCamp are great resources that seniors can explore from the comfort of their own homes.

  • N-friendly (adj): thân thiện với … (e.g. beginner-friendly: thân thiện với người mới bắt đầu)
  • Learn at one‘s (own) pace: học với nhịp độ phù hợp với bản thân
