1. Are you a polite person?
Well, I’d say my politeness is a bit situational. Most of the time, I do my best to stay courteous. But I’m only human—if a stranger scolds me out of the blue, I might find my eyebrows furrowing a bit before I can put my polite mask back on. In other words, I aim for politeness, but I’m not a robot—sometimes it takes a moment to catch up with me.

2. Who taught you to be polite?
I guess, just like most people, my first lessons in politeness were instilled by my parents. They taught me to respect others, especially the elderly, and to follow the countless little etiquettes that appear at mealtimes. My mum and dad had been imparting these habits to me since I was a child. But beyond that, I also absorbed a lot of politeness from Japanese culture, which I’d been truly fascinated with throughout my entire undergraduate years.

3. Is it important to be polite?
Well, definitely, I believe politeness is essential in a civilized world. You can’t behave rudely and still expect to leave a good impression on others. Without basic courtesy, people will be less willing to lend a hand or collaborate with us in projects or any kind of endeavour. That, in the long run, can become a real hindrance to our success. Without basic courtesy, people will be less willing to lend a hand — and honestly, success is a lot harder to build if you keep pushing away the very people who could help you.

4. What do you do if others are not polite to you?
Well, I think my reaction really depends on my relationship with that person. If it’s a family member, I would tell them directly that their behaviour hurt me or that such a demeanour could strain the relationship. After all, I’ll continue to live with and meet these people, so I believe expressing my discomfort is a way to maintain harmony in the long run, even if it might cause a little tension at the moment. But if it’s a stranger, I’d probably just raise an eyebrow, slip my polite mask back on, and walk away.
