1. Tổng quan dạng bài Two-part question IELTS essay

Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, Two part question essay (còn gọi là Direct question essay hoặc Double question essay) là dạng đề mà thí sinh phải trả lời hai câu hỏi riêng biệt về cùng một chủ đề.

Ví dụ: Nowadays many people choose to have fewer children. Why is this happening? What will be the long-term effects of this trend on society?

Ở đây, đề yêu cầu thí sinh xử lý hai câu hỏi:

Why is this happening? – Tại sao hiện nay nhiều người chọn có ít con hơn?
What will be the long-term effects of this trend on society? – Những ảnh hưởng lâu dài của xu hướng này lên xã hội là gì?

Nếu bạn chỉ trả lời một câu hỏi, bạn sẽ mất điểm nặng ở tiêu chí Task Response.

Các dạng thường gặp trong Two part question essay:

Dựa trên yêu cầu, các cặp câu hỏi trong dạng bài này thường rơi vào 3 nhóm chính sau:

1. Causes and Problems (Nguyên nhân và Vấn đề): Dạng này yêu cầu bạn giải thích lý do của một hiện tượng và sau đó phân tích những vấn đề hoặc tác động tiêu cực mà nó gây ra.

Ví dụ: In many cities, the use of private cars is increasing. What are the causes of this? What problems does this trend create?

2. Problems and Solutions (Vấn đề và Giải pháp): Dạng này yêu cầu bạn xác định các vấn đề phát sinh từ một xu hướng và sau đó đề xuất những giải pháp khả thi để giải quyết chúng.

Ví dụ: The migration of people from rural areas to big cities is a common trend. What problems does this cause? What are some possible solutions to address these problems?

3. Causes and Solutions (Nguyên nhân và Giải pháp): Dạng này yêu cầu bạn tìm ra nguyên nhân của một vấn đề và sau đó đưa ra các biện pháp để khắc phục hoặc đảo ngược xu hướng đó.

Ví dụ: In many countries, traditional foods are being replaced by fast food. What are the reasons for this? How can this trend be reversed?

Nhìn chung, nếu thấy đề bài có hai câu hỏi cụ thể, đó chính là dạng Two part question essay.

2. Hướng dẫn viết Two-part question essay trong IELTS Writing Task 2

Để viết hiệu quả dạng Two part question essay, bạn có thể triển khai theo 5 bước sau:

Bước 1: Phân tích đề bài

Cũng giống các dạng Task 2 khác, việc đầu tiên là phân tích kỹ đề để tránh lạc hướng.

Xác định chủ đề (topic) mà đề đưa ra.
Gạch chân instruction words (câu hỏi chính), thường sẽ có 2 phần.
Hình dung sơ bộ ý tưởng để trả lời từng câu.

Ví dụ: In some countries, the number of people choosing to live by themselves is increasing rapidly in recent years. Why is this the case? Is this a positive or negative development?

Câu hỏi 1: Vì sao ngày càng nhiều người chọn sống một mình.
Câu hỏi 2: Đây là xu hướng tích cực hay tiêu cực.

Bước 2: Lập dàn ý

Một dàn ý rõ ràng sẽ giúp bài viết của bạn có cấu trúc logic, mạch lạc và đảm bảo không bỏ sót bất kỳ yêu cầu nào của đề bài. Cấu trúc chuẩn cho một bài two part question essay gồm 4 phần:

Mở bài (Introduction):

Câu 1: Paraphrase (viết lại) chủ đề của đề bài bằng từ ngữ của bạn.
Câu 2: Giới thiệu rằng bài viết sẽ trả lời lần lượt hai câu hỏi đã cho (Thesis Statement).

Thân bài 1 (Body Paragraph 1):

Câu chủ đề (Topic Sentence): Nêu ý chính sẽ trả lời cho câu hỏi 1.
Các câu hỗ trợ (Supporting Sentences): Đưa ra 2-3 lý lẽ, giải thích và ví dụ cụ thể để làm rõ ý chính.

Thân bài 2 (Body Paragraph 2):

Trả lời đầy đủ và chi tiết cho câu hỏi thứ hai.
Câu chủ đề (Topic Sentence): Nêu ý chính sẽ trả lời cho câu hỏi 2.
Các câu hỗ trợ (Supporting Sentences): Đưa ra 2-3 lý lẽ, giải thích và ví dụ cụ thể để làm rõ ý chính.

Kết bài (Conclusion):

Tóm tắt lại câu trả lời chính cho hai câu hỏi đã được trình bày ở hai đoạn thân bài.

Bước 3: Viết mở bài (Introduction)

Ví dụ với đề bài mẫu:

Bạn có thể triển khai như sau:

Nêu chủ đề của bài viết bằng cách paraphrase lại đề bài: In today’s world, living alone has become an increasingly popular choice for people.
Đưa ra câu trả lời chung, ngắn gọn cho 2 câu hỏi mà đề bài đưa ra: There are several reasons why more people are opting for living on their own, and this can cause a range of negative impacts.

Bước 4: Viết thân bài (Body paragraphs)

Tham khảo cách triển khai một đoạn thân bài Writing Task 2 như sau:

Viết đoạn thân bài 1 (Body paragraph 1)

Body 1: Why more and more people choose to live alone? (Vì sao ngày càng nhiều người chọn sống một mình)

Main idea 1: Independence / Freedom

Explain: People live alone, away from their family, can do what they want without having to worry about disturbing others

Example: Young people may ask their friends to come over and have a party until late, which does not concern their parents because they live in another place.

Main idea 2: Not having to take many responsibilities

Example: Marriage life involves many duties such as taking care of children as paying bills for the whole family
Explain: If people live alone, they have more time for their own interests and hobbies (travelling, shopping)

One primary reason why people choose to live alone is the desire for independence. Without family members around, they can freely make their own decisions and lifestyle choices. Unlike married life, which includes childcare and household duties, individuals who live on their own have more time to focus on personal interests such as travelling or shopping.

Body 2: Is this a positive or negative development? (Việc này ảnh hưởng tốt hay xấu?)

Main idea 1: Loneliness

Explain: Deal with their daily problems all by themselves
Example: When they get sick, there is no one to take care of them, buy medicine or take them to the hospital
Result: They may struggle and feel isolated.

Main idea 2: More people living alone = demand for housing increases

Result: Housing price increases rapidly, especially in cities / lack of accommodation.

However, this trend also brings about negative impacts. Firstly, individuals living alone are more likely to experience loneliness, as they have to deal with daily problems by themselves. For instance, when they get sick, there is no one to take care of them or buy necessary medicine. Secondly, an increasing number of people living alone leads to higher demand for housing. As a result, housing prices in urban areas rise rapidly, making accommodation less affordable for many.

Bước 5: Viết Kết bài (Conclusion)

Khẳng định lại câu trả lời cho 2 câu hỏi đề bài đưa ra. Việc này có thể thực hiện bằng paraphrase lại mở bài.

Bạn có thể viết phần Conclusion như sau:

In conclusion, the rising number of people choosing to live alone is mainly due to their desire for independence and fewer responsibilities. However, this development is largely negative as it can lead to loneliness and soaring housing prices.

Bài mẫu:

It is increasingly common for individuals, both young and old, to choose a solitary lifestyle. This essay will first explore the primary reasons behind this growing trend, and then discuss the main benefits and drawbacks associated with living alone.

There are two main drivers for the rise in single-person households. The most significant factor is the pursuit of personal freedom and independence. Young adults, in particular, often move out of their family homes to study or work in different cities, which allows them to live by their own rules without family constraints. They have the autonomy to make their own decisions regarding their lifestyle, schedule, and finances. Secondly, increasing economic prosperity in many parts of the world means that more people can afford to live alone.
