Films and computer games that contain violent content have become highly popular in recent years. While some argue that such media has damaging effects on society and should therefore be prohibited, others contend that it is simply a form of harmless leisure. This essay will examine both views before explaining why I believe regulation, rather than a ban, is the most effective approach.
On the one hand, violent entertainment can have harmful consequences. Exposure to graphic violence may desensitize audiences, reducing their ability to empathize with victims of real-world aggression. Young people, in particular, are susceptible to imitating what they see in films or games, which could encourage aggressive behaviour or even bullying. Research in psychology has often shown a correlation between consuming violent video games and heightened levels of hostility, suggesting that unregulated access to such media may undermine social harmony.
On the other hand, many people argue that these forms of entertainment are generally harmless. The vast majority of viewers and players are perfectly capable of distinguishing fantasy from reality, and they use such media as a means of relaxation rather than imitation. For instance, millions of people worldwide watch action films or play combat-based games without exhibiting violent behaviour in real life. In this sense, violent content can serve as a safe outlet for aggression, while also representing a legitimate form of artistic expression.
In my opinion, banning such entertainment altogether would be neither practical nor fair, as it would restrict personal freedom and ignore the fact that most consumers are unaffected by it. A more balanced approach is to implement age restrictions, parental supervision, and clear content ratings, ensuring that vulnerable audiences such as children are protected. Moreover, schools and governments should focus on educating young people about the difference between fictional violence and real-life consequences, which would mitigate potential risks without resorting to extreme censorship.
In conclusion, while violent films and games may indeed influence certain individuals negatively, they also serve as a harmless pastime for the majority. Instead of imposing a ban, stricter regulation and education offer a more effective way to address the issue.
