The line chart illustrates the number of trips abroad by UK residents and the number of inbound visits to the UK by foreigners between 1979 and 1999, while the bar chart compares the five most popular overseas destinations for UK citizens in 1999.
Overall, the volume of both inbound and outbound travel involving the UK rose markedly over the period, with overseas trips by British residents consistently outnumbering visits made by foreign tourists to the UK. Furthermore, in 1999, France attracted the greatest number of British visitors.
According to the line graph, in 1979, approximately 12 million journeys abroad were made by UK residents, compared with around 10 million inbound trips to the UK. Outbound travel grew steadily to about 20 million by 1985, before accelerating sharply, reaching over 50 million in 1999. In contrast, the figure for overseas visitors traveling to the UK rose more moderately, climbing from roughly 10 million in 1979 to about 27 million in 1999.
Regarding the bar chart, France was the most visited nation by UK travelers in 1999 with around 11 million visitors, followed closely by Spain with 9 million. Lagging far behind were the USA, Greece, which received 3.5 million and 2.8 million visits from UK nationals respectively. Finally, only 2 million residents from the UK traveled to Turkey, making it the least frequented destination out of the five countries.
