1. Bài mẫu (Sample)

One occasion when I was not allowed to use my mobile phone was when I took the IELTS Speaking exam. It was a few months ago at an official IELTS test center. Before entering the examination room, all candidates were required to leave their phones and electronic devices outside in a designated area. The staff were very strict about it because they wanted to ensure fairness and prevent any form of cheating.

To be honest, at that moment, I wasn’t too concerned about being separated from my phone. I was far more worried about the exam itself. I had been preparing for quite a while, so I was feeling quite anxious about my performance, whether I would answer fluently, whether I would run out of ideas, or whether I would misunderstand the examiner’s questions. Compared to that pressure, my phone seemed completely unimportant.

However, what’s interesting is that after I finished the exam, my attitude changed dramatically. Once I got my phone back, I started bringing it everywhere with me. I kept checking it constantly to see whether the results had been released. Even though I knew the official release date, I still refreshed my email and the results portal obsessively. It was almost ironic. During the exam, I didn’t care about my phone at all, but afterward, it became something I couldn’t stop checking.

Overall, being separated from my phone during the exam wasn’t difficult. The real challenge was dealing with the anticipation afterward.

Part 3:

1. How do young and old people use mobile phones differently?

I think young people tend to use mobile phones mainly for entertainment and social networking. They spend a lot of time on social media platforms, watching short videos, texting friends, or playing games. In contrast, older people often use mobile phones in a more practical way, such as making phone calls, reading the news, or keeping in touch with family members. They may not be as comfortable with new apps or digital trends as younger generations.

  • Social networking – mạng xã hội
  • Entertainment purposes – mục đích giải trí
  • Short videos – video ngắn
  • Digital trends – xu hướng công nghệ
  • Practical way – cách sử dụng thực tế
  • Keep in touch with – giữ liên lạc với

2. What positive and negative impact do mobile phones have on friendship?

Mobile phones have both positive and negative impacts on friendship. On the positive side, they make it much easier to stay connected, especially when friends live far away. People can send messages instantly or make video calls, which helps maintain relationships over time. On the negative side, excessive phone use can reduce face-to-face interaction. Sometimes when friends meet up, they may spend more time looking at their screens than actually talking to each other, which can weaken real-life connections.

  • Stay connected – giữ kết nối
  • Maintain relationships – duy trì mối quan hệ
  • Excessive phone use – sử dụng điện thoại quá mức
  • Face-to-face interaction – tương tác trực tiếp
  • Weaken connections – làm suy yếu sự gắn kết

3. Is it a waste of time to take pictures with mobile phones?

I don’t think it’s necessarily a waste of time. Taking pictures can help people preserve memories and document important moments in their lives. However, it becomes a problem if people focus too much on taking photos instead of enjoying the experience itself. For example, at concerts or family gatherings, some people spend the entire time recording videos rather than being present in the moment.

  • Preserve memories – lưu giữ kỷ niệm
  • Document important moments – ghi lại những khoảnh khắc quan trọng
  • Be present in the moment – sống trọn vẹn trong khoảnh khắc
  • Family gatherings – buổi họp mặt gia đình
  • Focus too much on – quá tập trung vào

4. Do you think it is necessary to have laws on the use of mobile phones?

Yes, I think certain laws are necessary, especially in situations where mobile phone use can cause harm. For example, using a phone while driving can be extremely dangerous, so strict regulations are essential to ensure public safety. However, I don’t think the government should control how people use their phones in private settings. There needs to be a balance between personal freedom and social responsibility.

  • Strict regulations – quy định nghiêm ngặt
  • Public safety – an toàn công cộng
  • Private settings – môi trường riêng tư
  • Personal freedom – tự do cá nhân
  • Social responsibility – trách nhiệm xã hội
  • Cause harm – gây hại
