1. Phân tích đề bài
1.1. Đề bài
Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

1.2. Phân tích đề bài
Dạng bài:
Opinion essay (giải thích nguyên nhân + đưa quan điểm cá nhân về tính tích cực/tiêu cực).
Từ khóa chính và từ đồng nghĩa:
- Children = youngsters, adolescents, juveniles, minors
- Spend hours every day = devote a great deal of time, be occupied for long periods, excessive use
- Smartphones = mobile phones, cell phones, handheld devices, digital gadgets
- Positive development = beneficial trend, advantageous change, constructive impact
- Negative development = harmful trend, detrimental impact, adverse consequence
Phân tích yêu cầu đề bài:
- Task 1: Trả lời “Why is this the case?” → đưa ra nguyên nhân (ví dụ: nhu cầu giải trí, áp lực học tập, ảnh hưởng xã hội, cha mẹ ít giám sát).
- Task 2: Trả lời “Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?” → lựa chọn quan điểm (thường nên chọn negative development, nhưng có thể công nhận vài lợi ích nhỏ để lập luận cân bằng).
Cách triển khai:
- Mở bài: Paraphrase đề + nêu quan điểm.
- Thân bài 1: Giải thích nguyên nhân.
- Thân bài 2: Nêu quan điểm (negative impact là chính, có thể thừa nhận lợi ích phụ).
- Kết bài: Khẳng định lại quan điểm.

1.3. Dàn bài chi tiết
Introduction
- Paraphrase câu hỏi: nhiều trẻ dành nhiều giờ mỗi ngày cho điện thoại thông minh.
- Nêu lý do ngắn gọn.
- Thể hiện rõ ràng quan điểm: đây là một sự phát triển tiêu cực.
Body 1 – Reasons why children spend hours on smartphones
- Lý do 1: Smartphones cung cấp nhiều trò giải trí dễ tiếp cận (games, social media, YouTube).
- Lý do 2: Áp lực học tập + cha mẹ bận rộn → trẻ ít được giám sát, smartphone trở thành “người giữ trẻ” hiện đại.
- Lý do 3: Ảnh hưởng xã hội – bạn bè cùng trang lứa cũng dành nhiều thời gian trên mạng, tạo hiệu ứng lan tỏa.
Body 2 – Positive or Negative Development
- Quan điểm chính: Negative development.
- Ảnh hưởng sức khỏe thể chất (mắt kém, béo phì do ít vận động).
- Ảnh hưởng đến kỹ năng xã hội (cô lập, giao tiếp trực tiếp giảm).
- Ảnh hưởng học tập (nghiện điện thoại làm giảm khả năng tập trung).
- Thừa nhận: có thể có lợi ích trong học tập và liên lạc nhanh chóng, nhưng mặt hại lớn hơn.
Conclusion
- Tóm tắt lý do trẻ em dành nhiều thời gian cho smartphone.
Khẳng định quan điểm: Đây là xu hướng tiêu cực, cần có sự kiểm soát và định hướng.
2. Bài mẫu
Nowadays, it is common to see children devote hours on end to their smartphones. This phenomenon stems from various social and personal factors, and in my opinion, it represents a largely detrimental development.
There are several reasons why youngsters become so absorbed in their handheld devices. Firstly, smartphones are designed to be highly engaging, offering a wide range of entertainment such as online games, social networking platforms, and streaming services. These options provide instant gratification, making it hard for children to disengage. Secondly, many parents lead busy lives and, as a result, tend to allow their children unrestricted access to phones as a convenient way to keep them occupied. Finally, peer influence plays a crucial role: when most friends spend time online, others feel pressured to do the same to maintain social connections.
Despite certain benefits, such as educational applications and the ability to stay connected with family members, I firmly believe that the drawbacks outweigh the advantages. Excessive smartphone use can cause significant health issues including eye strain and a sedentary lifestyle that leads to obesity. Moreover, over-reliance on virtual interactions may hinder the development of essential social skills like face-to-face communication. Academic performance can also be adversely affected, as constant notifications and entertainment apps reduce a child’s ability to focus on studies. Therefore, the negative consequences far overshadow the limited benefits.
In conclusion, children spend excessive time on smartphones due to entertainment value, parental factors, and peer influence. Nevertheless, I regard this as a negative trend since it poses threats to physical health, social development, and academic achievement.
