1. What kinds of shops are popular in your city?

I would say that as the general Vietnamese consumer behavior indicates rapid consumption, stores that sells trendy products and recycles their inventory in a short time tend to appeal to Vietnamese people. As an example, fashion boutiques and apparel stores in Vietnam often operate in a “fast fashion” manner, in which they sell their products quickly, in a short amount of time and restocks newer items fairly quickly. Moreover, stores such as Zara and H&M are huge in Vietnam because they deliver diverse clothing and they have the foreign element. This brings me to the next category: stores that sell foreign products. For some reason, Vietnamese people really likes foreign products and would pay obscene amounts of money to purchase them. As a result, shops that sells foreign foods, foreign clothing, foreign items or even foreign odds and ends are likely to have their products sold out highly quickly.

  • Indicate (v): biểu lộ; biểu thị

2. Why do young people like going to some boutiques?

In full honesty, I haven’t the faintest idea. But I can propably hazard a guess that the reasons are based on their consumer behavior and the shopping experience. As aforementioned, Vietnamese people really enjoy fast fashion apparel stores because it sells a diverse range of clothes in a short time because the fast fashion concept incentivizes the customers to buy fast lest they miss out on any potential trends. Furthermore, this concept appeals to the youth’s need to fit in and keep up with the trends. As a result, in specific occasions such as end of season sales, which subtlely implies the final chance to buy the clothes for a discounted price, these boutiques are packed with teenagers and young adults. Another reason I can think of is that from a shopping experience standpoint, going to fashion boutiques with friends or lovers can be very fun. Showing the favorite clothes and styles to others can be interesting and romantic for groups and couples respectively.

  • Incentivize (v): khuyến khích; thúc đẩy

3. Do you think location is the key factor that attracts customers?

From a business perspective, choosing the ideal location is crucial to gain exposure from diverse consumer demographics. To be more specific, shop owners tend to opt for places that have diverse population and has the business climate as well as the consumer behavior that are ideal for the shops to open and hopefully thrive. This is why numerous stores tend to be located in densely populated metropolitan areas. For instance, in Hanoi, numerous fashion boutiques are located in huge shopping malls due to the fact that most youngsters often frequent there. Another example is that the shopping malls are located in places that can be easily accessed or can be seen when city dwellers pass over them.

4. What is the difference between a small shop and a large shop?

Well, the biggest difference is obviously the size of the store. Most large shops even have multiple floors and in each floor, you can buy a diverse range items. On the other hand, aside from the obvious smaller size, smaller stores offer more a limited selection of products, and yet, the type of products are likely more focused and perhaps more niched. Furthermore, it is possible that small shops host higher quality. The prime example for this is that smaller cafes in Hanoi sell more specific and more focused types of coffee with an overall better quality.

5. How important are price and quality in influencing consumer behaviour?

The ideal answer should be that the higher the price of the products, the more pristine the quality of the products will be. Alas, the general consumers do not share that opinion. Most people would prefer buying cheaper products as they can be bought in bulk and can be consumed for a long time with a lower risk of spending too much money for a product that they do not like. In particular, it can be observed that people in the middle class or lower class do not care for quality, as long as it is cheap. In contrast, the upper-middle class and the upper class may focus on the products’ origins and quality and would not be too concerned for exorbitant pricing.

I honestly think that the focus on price and quality changes depending on different types of people. This could potentially spark a conversation about class division and consumer behavior.

  • Pristine (adj): nguyên gốc; hoàn hảo
  • In bulk: với số lượng lớn

6. Why is cheap fashion so popular?

Cheap fashion operates on a similar manner to the fast fashion concept. As previously mentioned, this trend focuses on selling specific apparels for a short amount of time, for instance, within a season, for cheaper prices. The products get bought and replaced fairly quickly, which ensure stable profit. Because most consumers prefer buying cheap products and owning diverse clothing, small fashion boutiques remain ubiquitous and enjoy a shared existence with high-end fashion houses so as to cater so people who do not prefer to spend obscene amounts of money for a T-shirt.
