I would like to preface this by saying that in no way I am a football fan nor am I fanatical about any athlete in particular. Neither do I root for any team except for the national team of Vietnam, of course. That being said, the song called “You’ll Never Walk Alone” has struck a certain chord within me.
I am well aware that the most popular and recognizable version of this song is a cover by the Pacemakers. The band, like The Beatles, was from Liverpool. I guess this is exactly the reason why the Liverpool Football Club has decided this would be their theme song, and they even turned this into their motto, which is absolutely quintessential, so that even I know this.
But did you know that this song was actually part of a musical? Apparently, this was the creation of a Hungarian writer, about the journey of a man making his way back to his beloved daughter through purgatory. In the musical, the song is sung twice – first to encourage the unfortunate widow after her husband’s death, and then to encourage the daughter at her commencement.
The lyrics of this song contain only the most obvious industry colin the song tells us to walk on through the rain walk on through the wind which you should not in case of typhoon or hurricane. The song also tells us to walk on with hope in our heart which is just the corniest thing I have ever heard. Maybe it is the repetition of the words to walk on that works for me. I think two of the fundamental facts of being a person are: one, we must go on; and two, none of us ever walks alone. We may feel alone, and in fact we will, but even in the crushing grinds of isolation, we are not alone.
Diehard Liverpool fans know this better than I do. The miracle of You’ll Never Walk Alone is you can hear it as school graduation song, as well as a funeral song, as well as We just beat Barcelona the Champions League song. I cannot for the life of me remember who said this, but the thing about it is that, it covers adversity and sadness, and it covers success. It’s a song about sticking together even when your dreams are tossed and blown. It’s a song about both the storm and the golden sky after it.

Part 3:
1. Are foreign songs popular in your country?
Absolutely. When I was growing up, Westlife was all the rage, and then it was Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and the list goes on. Today, there’s been a whole new generation of artists as well as audience. Sure, there have been a surge in the number of local artists who have been extremely successful in the scene, but it doesn’t negate the fact that American music industry still dominates.
- all the rage: rất thịnh hành
- a surge: sự gia tăng đột biến
- negate: phủ nhận
- dominate: chiếm ưu thế
2. Do you like to watch music TV programs? Why?
I suppose I did. During my childhood, MTV, along with Cartoon Network, was one of my favorite channels. To be fair, there wasn’t much TV to watch. On top of that, most programs were in English, and we had no view subtitle, so I had to do a lot of guessing on what the hell they are talking about. Nowadays though, I do not own a TV, nor am I that invested in music. So TV programs, those are not my cups of tea anymore.
- cups of tea: sở thích (thường dùng trong phủ định)
3. What are the differences between live concerts and online concerts?
I have no experience with the latter, so I honestly have no idea. That said, I have been to some live concerts and music shows, and I would say the best part about it is the atmosphere. By that I mean, when you are at the stadium, or just a random bar, but you are surrounded by dozens or dozens of thousands of strangers who can sing along your favorite songs, it is the most indescribable feeling in the world. I would hazard a guess that this is an experience that is not replicable in the virtual world.
- atmosphere: bầu không khí
- indescribable: không thể diễn tả
- hazard a guess: mạo muội đoán
- replicable: có thể tái tạo lại
4. What kinds of people like traditional music?
You might think that only old people would relish this genre, but the opposite might be true. In my country, there is a rise in the number of young artists, and by young, I mean people who are still in their 20s, who become household names by singing folk songs. They have breathed in a new life to the age-old melodies, modernized them, evolved them. And so for that reason, the medium age of traditional music fanatics has significantly decreased during the last five years.
- relish: yêu thích
- household names: tên tuổi nổi tiếng
- breathe in a new life to: thổi luồng sinh khí mới vào
- medium age: độ tuổi trung bình
5. What kinds of music do young people like?
It’s… we like whatever we like. It is really a matter of taste. That is to say, some of us enjoy pop music and know every new hit, some of us can rock out to Linkin Park for example, while some of us prefer more mellow tunes like classical. That is the wonder of the flat world, isn’t it? You can have access to so many different aspects of life, you can download it as well as upload it, i.e. you can share your interests with the rest of the world and therefore you can gain a sense of companionship.
- rock out to: quẩy theo nhạc rock
- mellow tunes: giai điệu nhẹ nhàng
- companionship: sự đồng hành, cảm giác có bạn bè
6. Why are many music competitions popular in Vietnam?
This is a tough one considering that I do not watch a lot of TV or follow pop culture to that point. But then again, I would suspect that the entertainment industry has a real niche way to make this appealing to the audience. In the past, local TVs only focused on producing shows to showcase the talents of the composers, the music producer, and of course the vocalist. But when American Idol and The X Factor came into the scene, it was really a game changer. Competitions are no longer to determine who’s the best of the best anymore; it is about reality TV shows. The audience can sit home and poke their nose into everyone’s business and there’s nothing hotter than gossip I would say.
- game changer: yếu tố làm thay đổi cục diện
- niche: đặc thù, chuyên biệt
