ielts speaking part 3 What outdoor activities are popular in Vietnam

1. What outdoor activities are popular in Vietnam?

Sample 1: It’s safe to say that Vietnamese have a thing for outdoor team sports such as football, volleyball and basketball to name but a few. Most of these activities are incredibly accessible, requiring minimum gear and investment so everyone can enjoy them irrespective of their financial status, hence their enormous popularity. Take football, for instance, all you need is a ball along with a few random items to set up the posts of the goal.

  • have a thing for: dành điều gì cho
  • to name but a few: lấy ví dụ
  • accessible: có thể truy cập
  • minimum gear and investment: thiết bị và đầu tư tối thiểu

Sample 2: Well, to my way of thinking, there are a wide range of different activities in Vietnam, but the most popular one is probably football. The explanation for this is that it’s considered to be ‘the king of sports’ in many countries and Vietnam is no exception! Besides being fun, benefits of this sport also include reducing your risk of certain chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. What’s more, Vietnamese are probably very fond of outdoor concerts since they can have a blast with their friends.

  • reduce risk of certain chronic illnesses: giảm nguy cơ mắc những bệnh mãn tính
  • have a blast: tận hưởng thời gian vui vẻ

2. Are those people who like dangerous activities more likely to be successful?

Sample 1: Probably. These are adventurous and daring people and in life, sometimes you have to take risks to achieve greater success. I find that people who have an appetite for taking risks tend to see faster promotions and higher wages as they’re willing to take on difficult albeit high-rewarding jobs that risk-averse ones tend to avoid.

  • adventurous and daring: mạo hiểm và táo bạo
  • have an appetite for: thích chấp nhận
  • high-rewarding jobs: công việc lương cao
  • risk-averse: ngại rủi ro

Sample 2: This is probably true to some extent. The reason is because risk taking has strengthened their will to keep on going no matter what. Also, risk takers know that success won’t fall in your lap. They know that unless they go out of their way to achieve a target, they won’t be able to succeed. However, it’s smart to take the degree of risk into consideration for your own safety.

  • strengthen their will: trau dồi ý chí
  • fall in their lap: tự dưng đạt được không cần cố gắng
  • go out of their way: cố gắng hết sức

3. Do you think it’s better for people to change jobs when there are new chances?

Sample 1: It very much depends on the career stages that they’re on. If one is only in an early stage of their professional pursuits then it’s infinitely better because they might want to try different professions, acquire a diverse skill set and expand their professional network.

If one’s in the late stages of their career, then late-career changes or job switches are perhaps not worth it. The stakes are high as they could lose their life savings or can’t provide for their family should things not go as expected.

  • life savings: tiền tiết kiệm

Sample 2: I reckon it’s not advisable to switch jobs too often. With that being said, if you don’t feel appreciated, it can be a good move to leave and join a workplace where there’s recognition for hard-working employees. On top of this, being underpaid can also be a good reason to seek alternative employment, especially when people’s lifestyle changes.

  • recognition for hard-working employees: sự công nhận dành cho nhân viên chăm chỉ
  • being underpaid: bị trả lương quá thấp

4. Should young people try as many new activities as possible?

Sample 1: Yes, they should, especially when it comes to activities that stretch them mentally and emotionally. That’s how they can build a wealth of memories and experiences, and broaden their horizons to be better prepared for difficult times in the future. Life is boring without changes and challenges.

  • stretch them mentally and emotionally: khiến họ căng thẳng về tinh thần và cảm xúc
  • a wealth of: vô số
  • broaden their horizons: mở rộng tầm nhìn

Sample 2: It depends on the type of activity. On the one hand, it can be beneficial for the youth to try a new job or play a new sport, so that they can expand their horizon, hone their skills or find a passion in their life. On the other hand, if it’s something illegal such as using a narcotic substance, I believe it’s something inadvisable.

  • expand their horizon: mở rộng tầm hiểu biết
  • narcotic substance: chất cấm
  • inadvisable: không nên làm
