2. Bài mẫu
New York City, Easter Sunday Parade, a group of women were captured smoking in public, by a photographer, not a police officer. The photo was later splashed across major national newspapers, saying that they were lighting “torches of freedom”, asserting their autonomy and independence. And with that, modern day marketing industry was born.
Those who deem advertising useless are sorely mistaken. In fact, this undoubtedly has been facilitating economic growth. Were companies unwilling to allocate a tenth of their revenue to the marketing departments, the public would not be aware of the available goods and services, let alone make a purchase or become loyal customers. In return, retail shops and companies would suffer from a lower revenue stream. On a broader level, economic circulation could come to a halt. Thus, advertisements serve financial purposes.
However, it should be noted that as the marketing industry continues morphing, the direction it took is less creative than manipulative. Professionals are trained to identify their consumers (Southeast Asian women, for example), locate their “pain points” and make them feel worse about it (higher level of melanin in their skin that reduce their chance of finding true love), before offering a solution (a whitening facial cream). The result is that shoppers’ insecurity runs deeper, and so are the corporate pockets.
At the same time, the masses have been converted to consumerism. This can be seen as they gorge themselves with countless choices of juice cleansers advertised as sugar-free and nutrient-dense. This can be seen as they are inflicted with a case of FOMO and the cure is the latest lip gloss from Rhode or a pair of Onitsuka Tiger sneakers. The transition from substantial to superficial lifestyle and value is sponsored by the marketing industry, stealthily in forms of bandwagon or celebrity endorsement.
Another argument against marketing in general and advertising in particular is the invasive way they function. It is indeed vexing to see banners prominently put along desolate highways and congested routes, commercials infecting TV screens at homes and in elevators, and products nonchalantly placed in blockbusters and soap operas. However, it is alarming how internet users’ data are collected and sold to the highest bidders to curate targeted ads, all of which are unbeknownst to them.
Though I acknowledge how the marketing industry is instrumental in economic development, I would concede that advertising activities, along with surveillance capitalism, should be monitored. There should be guidelines and regulations that companies must adhere to, such as purely to inform consumers of the tangible, actual benefits of a product in the simplest and most concise form possible, or only target those who are of age and of sound mind to make a purchase. History also shows that a complete sanction is usually ineffective and could potentially lead to unwanted results, a lesson that policymakers should remember.
To quote the brilliant Mark Manson, when marketing messages are designed to induce feelings of inadequacy are scaled up to thousands of advertising messages hitting every single person, every single day, there have to be psychological repercussions.
