1. When do people normally send gifts to others?

In Vietnam, people usually send gifts on special occasions like birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries. During traditional holidays like Tet (Lunar New Year), it’s pretty much a given that people exchange gifts to show appreciation and keep relationships strong. We also tend to give gifts when someone achieves something significant, like graduating or getting a promotion. It’s really just a way to show you care and to maintain good vibes.

2. Do people give gifts or red packets on traditional festivals?

During traditional festivals like Tet, giving red packets, or “lì xì,” is the norm, especially for kids and younger folks. These red envelopes symbolize good fortune and are kind of a must-have. While red packets are the go-to, some people also bring along gifts when visiting friends or family. These might be fruit baskets, tea, or something special from the local area. But all in all, red packets take center stage during these festivals.

3. Is it easy to choose clothes as gifts?

Picking clothes as gifts can be a bit of a minefield. You have to nail the recipient’s size, style, and whether they’ll actually wear it. It’s easy to miss the mark, especially if you don’t know them really well. Because of this, many people play it safe with more neutral gifts like accessories or gift cards. It’s a case of better safe than sorry when it comes to gifting clothes.

4. Will people feel happy when receiving an expensive gift?

Getting an expensive gift can definitely bring a smile, but it all depends on the situation and the relationship. Some folks might feel genuinely touched because it shows the giver really went the extra mile. On the flip side, it can sometimes be a bit awkward, especially if the receiver feels they can’t give back something of equal value. In Vietnamese culture, it’s the thought that counts, so while an expensive gift might make someone happy, it’s really the meaning behind it that seals the deal.

Từ vựng (Vocabulary):

  • Appreciation: Sự trân trọng, sự biết ơn
  • Maintain good vibes: Duy trì mối quan hệ tốt đẹp
  • Fortune: Sự may mắn, tài lộc
  • Center stage: Vị trí trung tâm, vai trò chính
  • Minefield: Tình huống phức tạp, khó khăn
  • Nail: Đạt đúng, làm chuẩn xác
  • Miss the mark: Không đạt được, không đúng
  • Play it safe: Chọn phương án an toàn
  • Go-to: Lựa chọn hàng đầu
  • Extra mile: Sự nỗ lực thêm, vượt xa mong đợi
  • Flip side: Mặt trái, mặt khác
  • Awkward: Ngượng ngùng, không thoải mái
  • Seal the deal: Kết thúc thỏa thuận, chốt hạ
