1. Is it important to have a break during work or study?

The significance of frequent breaks during a work or study session cannot be overstated. This healthy practice prevents our brain from burning out too quickly and resets cognitive functions. As a result, it can actually increase workers’ productivity or help students to retain information more efficiently. It’s more about working smart rather than working hard.

  • cognitive functions: các chức năng nhận thức

2. What sports do young people like to do now?

I guess the youth leans towards sports that involve either teamwork, risks or high intensity exercise. Say, football, bungee jumping or basketball. The fascination for such recreational activities is not seen across the age spectrum because the elderly would rather have low-impact sports that normally don’t require any company whatsoever. Jogging and swimming are two go-to forms of physical exercise amongst people in this age group.

  • leans towards: nghiêng về

3. Are there more activities for young people now than 20 years ago?

Certainly. Technological advancements have led to the proliferation of modern leisure activities. Youngsters not only in Vietnam but throughout the world can now enjoy the omnipresence of e-sports which naturally weren’t available before the introduction of computers and game consoles. By the same token, the advent of the Internet and streaming services like Netflix means that the youth can watch the latest blockbusters from the comfort of their own home. 20 years ago, they had to spend a fair amount of money to go to the movie theatre for pretty much the same experience.

  • proliferation: Sự sinh sôi

4. Can most people balance work and life in Vietnam?

Given the prevalence of 996 work culture in Vietnam, I suppose it’s simply an impossibility for many. Basically, the infamous 996 culture refers to a system in which employees report to work from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, six days per week, for a total of 72 work hours rendered for their employers. With that many hours, it’s unlikely for the majority of workers to strike the right balance between work and life. Needless to say, this unhealthy lifestyle has brought about many adverse effects on hard workers’ mental wellness. Unfortunately, work-life harmony and a healthy mind seems like a luxury reserved for certain well-off folks.

  • prevalence: phổ biến

5. What activities do children and adults do nowadays?

Depending on their, people have a plethora of activities to engage in today. On the one hand, younger demographics can partake in numerous recreational activities ranging from extreme sports like skydiving to mind sports like monopoly. On the other hand, older demographics are arguably more sedentary so they gravitate towards soothing solo activities such as painting, meditating and gardening to name but a few.

6. Do adults and children have enough time for leisure activities nowadays?

Not by any stretch of the imagination. Life has been increasingly more hectic and busier, as an average person now allocate anywhere between 50 to 55 hours per week to working or studying. While it is understandable that work is an integral part of life and we should all be diligent, life is also about enjoyment. Therefore, it’s imperative that society find a way to lessen the workload at school for children or trial 4-day work week instead of the current 5 or 6 day scheme.

  • integral: không thể thiếu
  • diligent: siêng năng
