Describe an important decision you made with the help of others
You should say:
- What the decision was
- When you made the decision
- Whom you made the decision with
- And how you felt about the decision.
Today, I would like to talk about a time when I had to seek advice on my future career directions.
[What the decision was and when you made it] The year was 2014 and I had just begun my junior year at Seattle University which offers one of the most prestigious business programs in Northwest America. Even though I attained a scholarship here, I was clueless about what to major in. I could only pick from Accounting, Marketing, International Business, Economics, and Finance. Most importantly, I only had a handful of days to make up my mind, since I was a third-year student already.
[Whom you made the decision with] Now, as human beings, we are entitled to our opinions and thus are able to determine our own courses of action independently. However, there come times when we have to face really difficult decisions and simply cannot carry the load without a little help from others. Since I did not have the stomach to settle this on my own, I picked up the phone and I called my father and quickly walked him through the whole thing. After I was finished, he asked what I thought of each specialization. Upon hearing what I had to say, he suggested that I give finance a shot. I was completely in shock since managing finance and handling money was not my forte. However he thought that it was a very flexible concentration, and on top of that, it would make me become more financially responsible.
[How you felt] I spent a couple of days thinking about what he had said, and I eventually decided to have a crack at finance. The craziest thing was that it kept growing on me during my junior and senior year of college. After graduation, I worked for a bank, helping people built and managed their finances. Now, I am one year in at this fund management company where a lot of the things I learned in school are being applied here on a daily basis, and personally, I am much better at handling my own finances now. I think I made the right call, thanks to my dad.
