ielts speaking part 3 Why do people learn foreign languages

1. Why do people learn foreign languages?

There are a wide variety of reasons why foreign languages are learnt. I guess it is because people are generally seeking for the unknown. They aspire to immerse themselves in a new culture and what is a better way to do so than taking up the language of that very culture? Erm, well, some may also pursue their perennial dream of working overseas and you know if they are not a proficient user of the language in such a nation, I don’t believe they will climb the ladder as they wish. The last reason that springs to my mind now is that, especially for students who wish to study abroad, some educational institutions take IELTS or SAT or TOEFL (for English), HSK for Chinese, N1 N2 something for Japanese, and so on, as an admission requirement. So if students do not meet that, there will be no chance for them to be granted admission in the first place.

  • Aspire to V / Aspire to something: to want something very much or hope to achieve something or be successful
  • A perennial dream: a dream one have had for a long time
  • To climb the ladder (expression): to become more successful at work, to get promoted to a higher position

2. What makes a good foreign language teacher?

Well, as an English and French learner, I firmly believe that pedagogy methodologies make a good foreign language teacher. If the teacher is well-trained enough, they would be able to deliver the language items efficiently. What I mean by “efficiently” is that they present those items slowly and clearly so as not to scare the students away. I was taught by some French teachers in the past that, you know, they turned French into some kind of nightmare for me. You know how complicated all the verb conjugation is in French.

  • Pedagogy methodologies (phrase): teaching methods

3. Do you think grammar is important when learning foreign languages?

I do believe so, especially when grammar is the key factor that distinguishes the foreign language from the learner’ mother tongue. Just take Vietnamese learners for example. In Vietnamese, we just have three tenses. You say “I eat an ice cream”, for instance. You wanna make it happen in the past, in the future, or right now? There’s nothing to it! You just need to add a sheer simple word in each situation, applied in literally any sentence you can think of. However, the story is different in English, which has 13 tenses, and each tense has different forms and special cases. So, if a Vietnamese learner does not comprehend the difference English grammar makes, it would be super duper challenging for them to carry on learning. The same is true for other languages, that’s my guess.

4. Is it interesting to be foreign language teacher? Why?

Haha, that’s a hard yes for me. I guess it boils down to personal preference. I’m a language enthusiast, anything about the English language can arouse my curiosity. And I just can’t help aspiring to make my students feel the same. And the journey of me doing so is different when I encounter different individuals. And I just enjoy it so much.

  • It boils down to something: If a situation or problem boils down to something, that is the main reason for it
  • To arouse one’s curiosity: to make one curious about something and want to know more about it
