This topic brought me immediately to the graduation ceremony at my Foreign Trade University about two years ago. To this day, I still vividly remember that the whole campus was absolutely buzzing with excitement as this marked an important milestone in every graduate’s life.

As I remember, I was there with my classmates, besties, and my parents. Since we had spent four years surviving endless assignments and exam seasons together, graduation felt like the light at the end of the tunnel. My parents were beaming with pride because they had supported me throughout my studies, both emotionally and financially, so seeing me graduate really meant a lot to them.

The ceremony began when everyone gathered in the main hall. We sat in the auditorium listening to speeches from the headmaster and representative students.  I still remember that the headmaster delivered such a heartfelt speech to thank parents and students for all their hard work and efforts throughout the university journey. Even though the speech was emotional, I could still see people smiling from ear to ear because everyone knew we had finally crossed the finish line. After the ceremony, the whole campus rushed outside to take countless pictures together. All of us were tossing graduation caps into the air, hugging each other, and taking selfies with flowers and certificates. It seems like happiness was written all over everyone’s faces.

Looking back, what left a deep impression on me was the genuine joy that parents and students have. For students like me, it was a huge weight off our shoulders because we no longer had to burn the midnight oil studying for exams. For parents, it was a proud moment because all their sacrifices had paid off in the end. It was one of those rare moments when everyone seemed to be on cloud nine at the same time.

Part 3:

1. Why is smiling important in social communication?

I guess it is because smiling creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A genuine smile can make people feel more comfortable and connected, especially when they first meet You can see it at birthday parties, wedding ceremonies, or even formal events like business meetings, people often smile to break the ice and lift the atmosphere. Without a smile, interactions can feel quite tense or awkward, as if everyone is keeping their guard up.

  • Break the ice: làm bầu không khí bớt ngại ngùng hoặc căng thẳng
  • Lift the atmosphere: làm cho bầu không khí trở nên vui vẻ và tích cực hơn
  • Keep their guard up: giữ khoảng cách hoặc luôn đề phòng người khác

2. Can a smile change a person’s mood?

Absolutely, I think smiling can sometimes have a surprisingly positive effect on a person’s mood. When people smile, especially after a stressful day, it can produce endorphins, which is something that can make us more relaxed or cheerful. This may be the reason why being around happy and positive people can instantly lift your spiritsThat being said, I don’t think smiling is a magic solution. If someone is going through a really difficult situation, forcing a smile probably won’t completely change how they feel.

  • Lift one’s spirits: khiến ai đó cảm thấy vui hoặc lạc quan hơn
  • That being said: tuy nhiên / mặc dù đã nói vậy
  • Force a smile: cố gắng cười dù thực sự không vui

3. Do you think people in your country smile more than in others?

I am quite on the fence. I wouldn’t say people in Vietnam smile more than everyone else, but I do think Vietnamese people are generally quite friendly and approachable. In everyday situations, especially when talking to friends, neighbors, or customers, people tend to smile a lot to show politeness and hospitality. However, compared to some Western countries, Vietnamese people can sometimes be a bit reserved when interacting with strangers. So I think it really depends on the social context and cultural norms.

  • Be on the fence: phân vân giữa hai lựa chọn
  • Reserved: khá kín đáo, ít thể hiện cảm xúc

4. What are the common reasons that make people happy?

I think there are many simple things that can put people in a good mood. Spending quality time with our beloved is one thing. Besides that, achieving personal goals, receiving good news, or even small things like getting a compliment or enjoying good food can brighten someone’s day. Nowadays, many people also feel happy when they have a good work-life balance because modern life can be quite stressful and fast-paced. At the end of the day, I think happiness often comes from meaningful relationships and a sense of fulfillment rather than material things alone.
Is it possible to tell if someone is forcing for a smile?

  • Put people in a good mood: khiến mọi người cảm thấy vui vẻ hơn

5. Is it possible to tell if someone is forcing for a smile?

Yes, I think it usually is. A forced smile often looks unnatural because it only appears on the lips, while a genuine smile also shows in the eyes and facial expressions. Sometimes people smile simply to be polite or to hide their true emotions, but others can still sense that something feels off.
