The given line graph depicts the breakdown of the New Zealand population divided into 4 age groups starting in 1950, and including projections to the year 2050.
Overall, it is evident that the New Zealand population was aging, with significantly more people falling in the groups of 35-year-olds and older, and fewer individuals aged below 34. It is also predicted that these trends will continue until 2050 when the majority of New Zealanders will be between 35 to 64 years old.
In 1950, about a third of the New Zealand population were at the age of 0-14, followed by roughly 28% of the 15-34 group. Between 1950 and 2010, while the percentage of people aged 15-34 dropped by 5%, that of those aged 0-14 jumped to 45% before slumping to shy of 30%. In 2050, the number of people at the age of 15-34 is predicted to halve to 10%. Meanwhile, predictions show that there will not be any change in the proportion of the 0-14 group, despite a marginal rise in 2030. With regard to the older age groups, people in their mid-30s and 60s accounted for only 15% of the population. This figure went up to 20% in 2010, and is projected to surge to over a third 40 years later, making the 35-64 group dominate the population. Having a similar trend, albeit less pronounced, the number for those aged 65 and upwards stabilized at 10% between 1950 and 1990 before increasing by 5% in 2010. By 2050, this population is expected to reach a fifth of all New Zealanders.
