1. In what ways have families in your country changed in recent years?
As far as I’m concerned, changes in family sizes probably is the most pronounced. In particular, larger families have shifted towards smaller units, and ever-growing living expenses are usually believed to be the major cause. Aside from that, the roles of family members have also more or less altered. For instance, men are not the only breadwinners in the family since now women also contribute to the family budget.
2. What role do grandparents have in the family in your country?
It is figuratively said that being a grandparent is like being a parent twice, and I believe that really well applies to the eldest members in most Vietnamese families. Despite certain changes, the majority of Vietnamese households still maintain the three-generation model in which grandparents take on a significant role of co-caregivers. They would, for example, look after the children when the parents are at work. In addition, grandparents can also give perfect moral support for all other members.
3. What do you think about single-parent families?
è That’s a rather broad question! And inexperienced as I am, I’d probably give my two cents on the aspects of finance and childcare. It is generally believed that single parents would struggle more in raising their kids, compared to other dual-earner households. However, I think the number of earners in a family does not determine its financial status, nor does it dictate how thoroughly the children would be cared. Instead, it is the parents’ sense of responsibility and tenacity in nurturing their kids that matter.
