- Heart of the city= city center = downtown: Trung tâm thành phố
Ví dụ: I really want to live in heart of the city because it is where most important events take place.
- Shopping center = Shopping mall: Khu trung tâm mua sắm
Ví dụ : There are a variety of shopping centers in Hanoi where I can buy anything.
- High–rise flat: Căn hộ nhiều tầng
Ví dụ: Most of my friends live in high–rise flats where there are a lot of other families living.
- Sprawling city: Thành phố lớn.
Ví dụ: I am going to visit a sprawling city in Japan which is very beautiful and attracts thousands of tourists because of its beauty at night.
- Office block: Tòa nhà văn phòng
- Multi–story car park: Bãi đỗ xe có nhiều tầng
Ví dụ: Most office blocks have multi–story car parks so that they can have enough places for vehicles of all workers.
- Chain store: Chuỗi cửa hàng đồ hiệu
Ví dụ: These small towns are dominated by famous chain stores.
- Fashionable boutique: Cửa hàng thời trang
Ví dụ: When you go to Hanoi, you will see a number of beautiful fashionable boutiques but the price is exorbitant.
- Upmarket shop: Cửa hàng đồ hiệu
Ví dụ: Do you know Gucci, one of the most well–known upmarket shops in France?
- Places of interest: địa điểm thu hút khách du lịch
Ví dụ: I know many places of interest in Hanoi where you would certainly like when you come there.
- Lively bars/restaurants: Quán bar, nhà hàng sinh động
Ví dụ: Young customers are passionate about lively bars because their atmosphere is very wonderful.
- The rat race: Lối sống chạy đua nhau
Ví dụ: The novel is about a couple who get out of the rat race and buy a farm in Itali.
1.2. Các danh từ về vùng nông thôn – Từ vựng chủ đề Hometown

- Suburb = Outskirt: Vùng ngoại ô
- In the suburbs = On the outskirts of + a place
Ví dụ: For a child who lived in the suburbs, a trip to the city was a great adventure.
= For a child who lived on the outskirts, a trip to the city was a great adventure.
- Out-of town shopping center/ retail park: Khu trung tâm mua sắm lớn ngoài thành phố
Ví dụ: My hometown has an out–of town shopping center which attracts a number of visitors in the weekend.
- Inner-city: Vùng nội thành, nhưng thường là nơi có nhiều vấn đề về xã hội
Ví dụ: There are huge problems in our inner cities.
- Poor housing: Khu nhà ở tồi tàn
Ví dụ: There are a lot of families in Hanoi inner-city still live in poor housing.
- Local facility: Cơ sở vật chất tại địa phương
Ví dụ: The government should upgrade local facilites so that residents can benefit from better services.
- Residential area: Khu dân cư
Ví dụ: I live in a residential area which has just been repaired and now it becomes a really beautiful and modern place.
- Neighbourhood: Vùng lân cận
Ví dụ: We live in a quiet, residential neighbourhood in the north of the city.
1.3. Từ vựng về giao thông – Chủ đề Hometown

- Public transport: Phương tiện công cộng
Ví dụ: There is a desperate need to improve public transport in the city.
- Traffic conjestion = Traffic jam: Ùn tắc giao thông
Ví dụ: There is usually a three-mile traffic jam on the road approaching the town every afternoon.
- Rush hour: Giờ cao điểm
Ví dụ: Residents living in this area are suggested not to travel at rush hour because it is a huge waste of time.
- Bus route: Tuyến đường xe buýt
Ví dụ: There are a lot of bus routes in the city that travelling around in the city becomes easier.
- Underground system/subway: Hệ thống phương tiện ngầm / tàu điện ngầm
Ví dụ: Rush hours in the subway are really terrible because of the traffic jam.

Hometown – Tourist attraction
- Pavement café: Cà phê vỉa hè
Ví dụ: Pavement café is an ideal place for those who want to hang out with their friends.
- Tourist attraction: Địa điểm thu hút khách du lịch
Ví dụ: Da Lat recently becomes a tourist attraction where there are tons of people not only local visitors but also foreigners coming each year.
- Boarded-up shops: Cửa hàng không còn kinh doanh
Ví dụ: There are a lot of boarded-up shops in my neighbourhood.
- Overcrowding: Đông dân
Ví dụ: Living in overcrowding is really uncomfortable in terms of traffic jam.
- Cost of living: Chi phí sinh hoạt
Ví dụ: Despite the high cost of living, Ho Chi Minh city is a greate place to live.
- Pace of life: Nhịp sống
Ví dụ: I prefer the relaxed pace of life in the countryside.
- Sense of community: Tính cộng đồng
Ví dụ: I enjoy living in the countryside because there is a sense of community.
1.5. Một số động từ miêu tả trong chủ đề Hometown
- To close down: Ngừng hoạt động kinh doanh
Ví dụ: All the shops around the neighbourhood were closed down in the 1980s.
- To get around: Đi loanh quanh
Ví dụ: I am the type of person who gets around – last week I could still be in Hanoi but the next week I would have been in Dalat.
1.6. Một số tính từ miêu tả trong chủ đề Hometown
Hometown – Peaceful
- Quiet = Peaceful = Tranquil: Yên bình
Ví dụ: The town looked tranquil in the evening sunlight.
- Green: Xanh, hay đi kèm với danh từ “city” – Green city: thành phố xanh
Ví dụ: While some parts of Ha Noi are industrial, it is still a green city which is an ideal place for everyone to live.
- Lively = bustling = vibrant: Sinh động, rộn ràng, nhộn nhịp
Ví dụ: Big cities are usually at their most vibrant during the New Year celebrations.
- Industrial (hay cụm industrial zone): (thuộc) khu công nghiệp
Ví dụ: If you live in an industrial zone, it is very risky for your health because you have to breathe in a polluted air.
- Provincial: Thuộc về tỉnh
Ví dụ: My hometown is a provincial town but it has changed a lot during the last ten years.
- Historic: Có tính chất lịch sử, được ghi vào lịch sử
Ví dụ: My hometown has many historic places such as Hoa Lo prison, so it attracts many tourists from all walks of life.
- Cosmopolitan: Đa dạng sắc tộc
Ví dụ: I really like the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city.
2. Một số cách diễn đạt thường dùng trong chủ đề Hometown
Be surrounded by picturesque countryside
Be surrounded by open/picturesque countryside:
- Được bao quanh bởi vùng quê thoáng đãng/ đẹp như tranh vẽ
- Ví dụ: My aunt’s house is surrounded by picturesque countryside. (Ngôi nhà của dì tôi được bao quanh bởi vùng quê đẹp như tranh vẽ.)
Downshift to a less stressful life:
- Thay đổi thành lối sống ít áp lực hơn
- Ví dụ: Sometimes you should take the time to visit your hometown to downshift to a less stressful life. (Đôi khi bạn nên dành thời gian về thăm quê nhà để giảm bớt căng thẳng trong cuộc sống.)
Enjoy/love/explore the great outdoors:
- Thích/yêu thích/khám phá hoạt động ngoài trời
- Ví dụ: My kids love to explore the great outdoors, so I usually take them to the countryside on weekends. (Con tôi rất thích khám phá các hoạt động ngoài trời, vì vậy tôi hay đưa chúng về vùng quê vào cuối tuần.)
Enjoy the relaxed/slower pace of life:
- Tận hưởng nhịp sống thư giãn/chậm hơn
- Ví dụ: My hobby is to go to the remote countryside to enjoy the slower pace of life. (Sở thích của tôi là hay tìm đến những vùng quê xa xôi để tận hưởng nhịp sống chậm rãi hơn.)
Escape/quit/get out of/leave the rat race:
- Trốn khỏi/bỏ/thoát khỏi/rời khỏi guồng quay cuộc sống
- Ví dụ: Countryside is a great place for you to escape the rat race. (Vùng quê là nơi tuyệt vời để bạn thoát khỏi guồng quay của cuộc sống.)
Look for/get/enjoy a little peace and quiet:
- Tìm kiếm/tận hưởng một chút thanh bình và yên tĩnh
- Ví dụ: If your life is stressful, look for a little peace and quiet by going to a remote countryside. (Nếu cuộc sống bạn áp lực, hãy tìm kiếm một chút yên bình và thanh tĩnh bằng cách về một vùng quê xe xôi nào đó.)
Need/want to get back/closer to nature:
- Cần/muốn trở về/gần gũi hơn với thiên nhiên
- Ví dụ: You will be closer to nature when you live in countryside. (Bạn sẽ được gần gũi với thiên nhiên hơn khi bạn sống ở nông thôn.)
Seek/achieve a better/healthy work-life balance:
- Tìm kiếm/đạt được sự cân bằng công việc-cuộc sống tốt hơn/lành mạnh
- Ví dụ: My family usually spends 2 days on the weekend in countryside. It helps us have a healthy work-life balance. (Gia đình tôi thường dành hai ngày cuối tuần ở miền quê. Điều đó giúp chúng tôi có sự cân bằng lành mạnh giữa công việc và cuộc sống.)
Seek/start a new life in the country:
- Tìm kiếm/bắt đầu cuộc sống mới ở vùng quê
- Ví dụ: My father says that he will start a new life in the country when he retires. (Bố tôi nói rằng ông ấy sẽ bắt đầu một cuộc sống mới ở miền quê khi ông ấy về hưu.)

1. Please describe your hometown a little
My hometown is surrounded by picturesque countryside with mountains and greenish lakes. However, due to the increasing economy, a number of businesses, especially in sugarcane, are invested in my hometown making it very promising.
2. How long have you been living there?
I had lived there for around 18 years before I went to a sprawling city for my college. It’s been more than seven years since I left my hometown.
2. Do you think you will continue living there for a long time?
Well, I want to move downtown as soon as possible as living in my hometown is unlikely to give me a chance to implement my goals and make my dreams come true. So it’s high chance that I’ll try to start a new life in a different place.
