2. Bài mẫu

There has been an ongoing debate on what the primary purpose of scientific advancement should be, with some saying that people’s lives should be its primary beneficiary. From my perspective, I thoroughly agree with this stance, and I will elaborate further in this essay.

In a more practical sense, as the main source of funding for scientific advancements is from the people, it is only natural for it to serve in their best interest. The entire research process, starting from the generation of the initial ideas to publishing the results to the general masses, is an extremely time-consuming and expensive procedure. As such, an enormous level of funding is needed to actually pay the staff members along with acquiring the equipment and materials for large-scale projects like these. The monetary resources required do not magically materialize out of thin air but often come in the form of governmental research grants, which are in actuality, the direct allocation of taxation revenue that the government collects from citizens each year. Based on this deduction, it is only logical to argue that it is the citizens who actually pay for the research being conducted each year, and their investment should be repaid through scientific innovations that serve their interests.

Moving to a more philosophical lens, keeping the benefit of humanity is an important ethical anchor in the endless pursuit of knowledge. Science, by itself, has no morality; it does not care about good or bad, nor does it differentiate between the should and the should not, with the only thing that it truly cares about being the discovery of new knowledge to add to the human library. Due to this innate lack of ethics, when this unending chase is pushed to its extreme, truly heinous methods that cross ethical lines might be employed in the name of science and progress, as illustrated by history. Research topics such as live human experimentation have been subjected to constant criticism from the public due to their inherent disregard for human autonomy as highly sentient creatures, and viewing them as disposable test subjects. Another instance of practices that violate core human beliefs is the act of eugenics: selectively restricting reproduction to those deemed genetically superior to create a “better” human race. Though selective breeding is not a new concept, when applied to humans, it is thoroughly disturbing as it not only takes away their fundamental rights to freely choose their partners and reproduce, but also classifies people into labels such as superior or inferior, which is extremely dehumanizing. Thankfully, both of these methods face immense backlash not only from the scientific community but also from the people at large, as they go against the good of humanity, proving that keeping humans’ interests as the core principle of scientific research is the most essential part so that innovations do not deviate and become malicious towards humanity.

In conclusion, improving people’s lives should always be the most important purpose that science strives towards, as it not only ensures that they receive the proper funding from the populace but also guarantees that scientific progress does not ultimately come back to harm humans.
