1. Do you like buying clothes?
Yes of course. Buying clothes online and visiting boutiques brings me great joy as I am able to showcase my individuality and imagination. Moreover, I find it exciting to explore different fashion trends and experiment with new looks. Once I saw the most beautiful chiffon sleeve pencil dress in a Kdrama, I decided that I got to have it so I went on the Internet and ordered one right away. Having said that, I also believe in mindful consumption and try to make sustainable choices when purchasing new items for my wardrobe. That’s why I never buy from brands that use real fur for coats or pollute the environment.
2. What kind of clothes do most people wear in your country?
In Vietnam, during Tet holidays or other special occasion, people often wear a variety of traditional clothing that reflects our rich cultural heritage. One of our most prominent garment is the ao dai, a silk tunic with pants worn by both women and men. Apart from that, there are ao ba ba and ao tu than. For daily wear, we opt for modern everyday clothing, but still incorporating Vietnamese traditional culture and designs with embroidered motifs, floral dress, leggings, and black shirts.
3. Under what circumstances would people in your country wear formal clothes?
If you work in an office and have to greet customers or attend meetings on a daily basis, formal wear like black lounge suit and tie, pencil skirt and blazer would undoubtedly be your go-to attire. Some occasions such as weddings, festivals, or important ceremonies may also call for traditional clothing like Ao Dai for women and suits for men. The outfit we wear can reflect the culture and tradition deeply rooted in our Vietnamese brains and is a way of showing our respect and honor. So if we don’t dress appropriately for the occasion, we’d become the laughingstock of our family and friends.
4. What is the difference between the clothing of the elderly and the young in Vietnam?
In Vietnam, there is a mix of traditional and modern clothing. Young women I’ve seen nowadays in cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi often stand out in stylish outfits such as cocktail dress, button-down shirt and high-waisted jeans. On the other hand, older women tend to wear ao ba ba, a loose-fitting outfit made from silk or cotton. The contrast between the clothing of the young and the elderly reflects the evolving fashion trends alongside the enduring influence of traditional Vietnamese culture.
5. When do people in your country wear traditional clothes?
We Vietnamese usually save traditional clothes for special occasions such as wedding ceremonies, Teacher’s day, and Tet holiday since having a custom made ao dai is costly as hell. The Ao Dai symbolizes the country’s grace and charm, reflecting the cultural significance and heritage of these occasions. Additionally, various ethnic groups in Vietnam, such as the Thai, Hmong, and Cham people, have their own distinct traditional clothing characterized by vibrant colors, intricate embroidery, and unique accessories like conical hats and silver jewelry.
6. Does the climate affect what people wear?
Most of the time, yes. The weather does affect what people wear outside of their home. In Vietnam, the extreme heat has led to the emergence of the “street ninja” look, where people wear heavy clothing, masks, and gloves to protect themselves from the sun, as an adaptation to the rising temperatures. However, the heavy clothing has led to road accidents and online trolling, despite some people considering it a sensible adaptation to the extreme heat and a creative response to climate change.
