1. Does your name have any special meaning?
2. Who usually chooses babies’ names in your country?
3. Is it easy for a person to change their name in your country?
4. If you could change your name in the future, would you?
1. Does your name have any special meaning?
My name is Thu Thuy, which literally translates as “the water in autumn” in English. My parents gave me this name because they wanted me to become someone who is gentle and calm like the autumnal water , which I think is thoughtful of them and this could be a lucky charm following me for the rest of my life.
- lucky charm: điều may mắn
2. Who usually chooses babies’ names in your country?
To my mind, parents tend to seek advice from grandparents, who are often well respected and seen as those who have accumulated more life experience. As they are seasoned individuals, they do know more meaningful names. But actually, in the past, grandparents used to give babies unattractive names in order to ward off evil spirits from harming them, which I think doesn’t really make any sense because I’m not superstitious. What’s more, astrologers can come up with names that are auspicious for infants. The are real experts in providing names that compliment the newborns’ fate.
- well respected: được coi trọng
- seasoned: dày dặn kinh nghiệm
- ward off evil spirit: xua đuổi điều hắc ám
- superstitious: mê tín dị đoan
3. Is it easy for a person to change their name in your country?
From a legal perspective, changing your identity is quite a real hassle, which I think is fair because otherwise, the authorities would have a hard time keeping track of their citizens and scammers would take advantage of their new identity to commit illegal acts or frauds.
- fraud: tội
4. If you could change your name in the future, would you?
In all honesty, even if I had a chance, I wouldn’t make a switch to my name. This is due to the fact that it has got sentimental value, I mean, it seems to be a precious and Meaningful gift from my parents, which I really treasure and adore. I would love to keep it forever, really.
- sentimental value: giá trị tinh thần
