1. Bài mẫu (Sample)

The person I’d like to talk about is my uncle, who lives in Frankfurt, Germany. Whenever my family and I visit him, he often takes us to a local farmers’ market on the weekends. It has actually become a nice tradition whenever we visit him.

He usually goes there to buy fresh produce, especially fruits and vegetables. My uncle is quite fond of buying things from local vendors because he thinks the quality is superb and though the prices are reasonable, the hardwired habit of him as an Asian to bargain with the sellers is always extremely funny to me. However, the things that my uncle and I look forward to the most are the fruits and the baked goods. Since we usually visit him in the summer, there are lots of fresh berries at the market, such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and the German specialties – the currants and the wild berries. We almost always end up buying more than a couple of boxes to take home.

As he lives there now, he probably goes to the market every weekend, whereas I only get to see it when I visit him. What I like about going there with him is that it doesn’t really feel like ordinary shopping. We can walk around, look at the different stalls, try some local food, and have a chat while we’re browsing through the boxes and baskets of produce.

I think my uncle prefers shopping there mainly because of the freshness and the atmosphere. He can purchase things directly from the locals, and the food feels more seasonal than what we would normally find in a supermarket. For me, though, the best part is simply going there with him. It’s become one of those small memories that I associate with visiting my uncle in Germany, especially during the summertime.

Part 3:

1. What are the differences between shopping in a shopping mall and in a street market?

I think the biggest difference is probably the shopping experience. Shopping malls are usually more comfortable and organised. They have air conditioning and fixed prices, not to mention the on-standby shop assistants who provide great customer service. Street markets, on the other hand, are usually more lively, and people can sometimes bargain with the sellers. The markets also tend to be better for buying fresh food, while malls are more suitable for clothes, electronics and branded products

  • organised (adj): sắp đặt có tổ chức, gọn gàng
  • fixed price (n phr): giá được niêm yết
  • to be on standby (v phr): trong trạng thái sẵn sàng
  • shop assistant (n): nhân viên bán hàng
  • customer service (n): dịch vụ chăm sóc khách hàng
  • branded product (n): sản phẩm có thương hiệu

2. Which is more commonly visited in Vietnam, shopping malls or street markets?

I would say street markets are still more commonly visited, especially for everyday shopping. A lot of Vietnamese people go to their local market to buy things like vegetables, meat and other fresh produce because it’s usually more convenient and more reasonably priced. That said, shopping malls have become increasingly popular, particularly among young people in big cities. People often go there not only to shop, but also to eat, watch films or spend time with friends

  • commonly visited (adj phr): được lui tới thường xuyên
  • everyday shopping (n phr): mua sắm hằng ngày
  • not only… but also… (gram): không những…mà còn…

3. Is advertising important?

Most definitely. I think advertising is important because it helps promoting a product or a business to people in the first place. If two separate shops sell similar products, a good advertising campaign will most likely create a buzz and make one of them stand out. However, I don’t think advertising is everything. For small businesses, especially vendors at traditional markets, things like good prices, product quality and word of mouth can be just as important. For most buyers, they may take interest in a product through commercials and advertisements, but to build trust and loyalty, sellers need to have high-quality, yet still affordable product and good customer service as well.

  • most definitely (phr): chắc chắn
  • to promote something to somebody (v phr): quảng bá cái gì tới ai đó
  • in the first place (phr): ngay từ đầu
  • campaign (n): chiến dịch
  • to create a buzz (v phr): tạo hiệu ứng bàn tán
  • stand out (phr v): nổi bật
  • word of mouth (n phr): lời truyền miệng
  • just as + adj (gram): cũng … như thế (just as important: cũng quan trọng như thế)
  • to take interest in something (v phr): hứng thú tới điều gì đó

4. What are the disadvantages of shopping in a street market?

There are a few disadvantages. First, the quality of products can be less consistent because different sellers may have very different standards. Prices can also be a problem because they aren’t always clearly displayed, so buyers may have to ask or bargain. Another issue is that markets can get quite crowded, especially at busy times, which can make shopping less comfortable. I think supermarkets and shopping malls are generally easier in that sense because everything is more organised.

  • consistent (adj): nhất quán
  • standard (n): tiêu chuẩn
  • clearly displayed (adj phr): trưng bày rõ ràng
  • at busy times (adv phr): vào những lúc bận rộn
  • in that sense (adv phr): xét theo phương diện đó
