1. Bài mẫu (Sample)

One situation that immediately springs to mind was when one of my closest friends, who is also kind of my friend-enemy, congratulated me after I got a surprisingly high score in an IELTS test.

This happened about a year ago, when I had been preparing for IELTS for months. My friend and I were both quite competitive, so we were constantly comparing our scores. We would joke about who was going to get a higher band, and, to be honest, there were times when we were trying to one-up each other. So, although we were close, there was always this tiny bit of rivalry between us.

Anyway, on the day I got my result, I was sitting at home refreshing my email over and over again. I had a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach because I had been convinced that I had messed up the Writing test. When I finally opened the result, I just froze for a few seconds. I had got an 8.5 overall, which was considerably higher than I had expected.

The first person I told was my friend. I was honestly expecting her to make some sarcastic comment, because that was usually how we reacted to each other’s achievements. But instead, she called me and said, “I’m genuinely proud of you. You worked your socks off for this.

That completely caught me off guard. There was a long pause on my end because I genuinely didn’t know what to say. I could hear her laughing because she knew she had made me emotional. Then she admitted that she had sometimes felt jealous of me because I seemed to improve so quickly, but she had never actually wanted me to fail.

That conversation was much more meaningful to me than the score itself. It was like the elephant in the room had finally been addressed. We’d spent so much time competing with each other that we had forgotten that we were actually on the same side. Her congratulations made me realise that our rivalry wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. In a strange way, it had pushed both of us to work harder.

Looking back, I think that was the first time I truly understood that she wasn’t just someone I competed against. She was someone who genuinely wanted to see me succeed. So, although it was only a short phone call, it really hit home for me, and I still remember it quite vividly.

Part 3:

1. On which occasions do people congratulate in your country?

There are quite a few situations where people would normally offer their congratulations in Vietnam. The most obvious ones are major life milestones, such as graduating from university, getting married, having a baby or landing a promotion. Academic achievements also tend to receive a lot of attention, particularly among young people. For instance, if someone gets a high IELTS score or passes a highly competitive entrance exam, their family and friends will probably shower them with congratulations. Smaller achievements might get a quick “Well done”, but bigger milestones are usually celebrated more enthusiastically.

  • milestones: những cột mốc quan trọng
  • shower them with congratulations: gửi lời chúc mừng nồng nhiệt đến họ

2. What kinds of ways do people congratulate in your country?

The way people express their good wishes usually depends on how close they are to the person and how important the occasion is. Close friends might simply send a heartfelt message, make a phone call or take the person out for a meal. For more significant events, people often give a small token of appreciation, such as flowers, a gift or money. These days, social media has also become a popular way of celebrating someone’s achievements, so people might post a photo together or leave a congratulatory comment. I think the whole process has become much more informal compared with the past.

  • a small token of appreciation: một món quà nhỏ để bày tỏ sự cảm kích

3. Why do some people want to be successful?

I suppose people’s reasons for striving for success vary quite a lot. For some, it’s mainly about financial stability and being able to afford a comfortable lifestyle. Others are motivated by recognition because they want to prove themselves or gain respect from the people around them. In Vietnam, family expectations can also be a major driving force. Some young people feel under pressure to live up to their parents’ expectations and achieve something that their family can be proud of. That said, I think there is a difference between being motivated by personal ambition and constantly measuring yourself against others. The former can be healthy, whereas the latter can become exhausting.

  • striving for success: nỗ lực hướng tới thành công
  • live up to their parents’ expectations: đáp ứng kỳ vọng của bố mẹ
  • measuring yourself against others: so sánh bản thân với người khác
