1. What do you do?

Well, actually I’m working as a part-time receptionist at a local hotel in District 1. I have just started this job for around 3 months. I thought it was going to be quite monotonous at the first glance, but it turned out to be very enjoyable and I’m thinking about sticking with it in the long run.

2. What are your responsibilities?

As a receptionist, my primary responsibility is to welcome and assist my guests with accommodations and to give them helpful information regarding our hotel’s services as well as local attractions. Additionally, I also have to answer phone calls, respond to emails and inquiries from clients, which takes me quite some time to get a hang of it.

3. Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)?

To be honest, as a university student majoring in Hotel Management, I believe that it would be a good idea to start off your career from a low position, which offers a ton of hands-on experience and expands your networking with other people in the industry although it is not really well-paid

Also, my main objective at this point is to garner as much experience as I could from both studying and working while ensuring my work-life balance, thus what is why I opted for this part-time position.

4. Is there some other kind of work you would rather do?

If I were to choose another job, I would like to be a chef specializing in Asian cuisine. I know it sounds a bit weird, but I have always been interested in cooking since I was a child. I remembered roaming around my grandma’s kitchen while she was preparing dinners for our family, peeping at the process where she added meat, vegetables and spices into the food, and tasting all of these scrumptious and delectable meals. It was simply amazing, and for that reason, I am now thinking of doing cooking as a side job in my spare time.

5. Do you enjoy your work?

Honestly speaking, I am pleased with my current position, although it is not considered an ideal job for many people.

There are several reasons why I find it fulfilling and satisfying. The first one is that I have the opportunity to meet and communicate with visitors from diverse backgrounds, which allows me to learn about their cultures and perspectives. Another reason is that being a receptionist helps me develop my soft skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, and organization. These skills are not only beneficial for my current position but also advantageous for career growth in the future.

6. What do you like about your job?

I would say that there are several aspects of the job that I find interesting and enjoyable, but the most noticeable one comes from the supportive and collaborative environment at my workplace, which is a critical factor to my enjoyment of the role. I am fortunate to work with a group of people that values open communication, teamwork, and mutual respect. This positive work environment enhances my overall job satisfaction.

7. What do you dislike about your job?

Well, generally speaking, I am enjoying my work as a receptionist, but there are a few aspects that I find quite challenging and less enjoyable. For example, sometimes I have to deal with unreasonable demands from some customers like providing extra bathtubs or religious ornaments upon their arrival. There is one extreme case when a customer requested that his bed at home be moved into the hotel room. Dealing with such situations requires a great deal of patience, empathy, and flexibility if you don’t want to lose your customers.

8. (Possibly)Do you miss being a student?

Honestly, I sometimes reminisce about my time as a high school student, when I could spend more time pursuing my hobby, which was playing trumpet, and hanging out with my friends. They were all great experiences, but now I have to step forward and apply the skills and knowledge that I gained in the past into my current profession.
